HaMakom Continuing Education Presents
Living Between Two Worlds
Presenter: Rabbi Nahum Ward-Lev
Tuesday, January 21, 7PM MST on Zoom
We all live at a time of worldwide instability and uncertainty. To clearly view our historical moment, we need to understand that we are living between two worlds. One world is dying—fitfully and with great resistance. Another world is gestating, yearning to be born. The Biblical prophets envisioned a different world than the oppressive regimes in which they lived. They articulated another way of living in God’s Creation. In this presentation, we will explore their analysis and vision to understand more clearly the deep cultural/societal patterns we need to leave behind, and those patterns that we need to nurture—in our personal lives and in our communities.

Going to Baht* for the Jewish Community in Bangkok
Presentation by Rabbi Jack Shlachter
The progressive (non-Orthodox) Jewish community in Bangkok,
Thailand, is composed largely of expats, some of whom
have been in the country for decades while others are more
recent arrivals. During the year, the worship services are lay
led, but a Rabbi is brought in to lead High Holiday services
each fall. This year, Rabbi Jack had the privilege of serving as prayer leader for the congregation. He’ll share his experiences both with the community and as a tourist in Bangkok through
a colorful and informative slide show.
*Baht is the unit of currency in Thailand

Donate to honor the memory of departed loved ones
and support HaMakom
The observance of Yahrzeit is a sacred mark of reverence for the beloved departed; remembering them imparts a dimension of sanctity to our lives as we join together to recite Kaddish at services. Our noble tradition also invites us to kindle a memorial candle at home, and to make a memorial offering in honor of the person who is being remembered.

AI--Another Climate Challenge and What You Can Do
The following is a summary of an article in this winter's issue of Audubon magazine. Artificial intelligence in all its applications utilizes a tremendous amount of energy. This is especially true of generative AI, which can write emails, conjure images, and compose music based on a user's prompts. Vast amounts of electricity are used, enough to derail efforts to ditch fossil fuels and confront climate change. Generative AI requires so much energy because it churns through extraordinarily complex math, with each line of text from a chatbot requiring billions of calculations. Writing a single email with ChatGPT can use as much energy as driving a two-ton electric vehicle half a mile! As a result, some companies are seeking out other sources of carbon-free energy, but some of those "solutions" are indeed frightening. Constellation Energy and Microsoft are working to reopen Three Mile Island nuclear plant to power data centers, and Google plans to build small nuclear reactors. AI's environmental impact also includes significant water consumption to keep servers from overheating.
Some businesses are attempting to adopt sustainability measures, but we can all help out. Doing everything possible to avoid using AI generative would obviously be a major step in a good direction, and we hope all of you will make such efforts. Thanks for all you do to help maintain our God-given planet!.
