Network Show and Tell
Halloween Festivities!

The First Steps teams at SBCS, Palomar Health (above), and SAY San Diego (below) celebrated
Halloween with office group costumes.
The SBCS team went all out representing various TV shows from Nickelodeon, to Cartoon Network, to Disney Channel. Can you spot all the old cartoons??
Things were buzzing in the Palomar offices with butterflies and bees flying around.
The SAY team had a Loteria-themed Halloween party! Each team member represented a different Loteria card. Can you spot Jessica as the HFA FROG mascot, too?
Well done teams!!

HFA & Baby TALK in The Windy City!

This past August, HFA National invited members of advisory groups to come together for a two-day in-person retreat in Chicago, IL. As a member of HFA’s Training Advisory Committee (TAC), Miriah de Matos, First Steps Associate Director, was able to attend. The retreat was an opportunity to meet with fellow trainers and share local training experiences.

Some highlights included seeing the poet, Harold Green, talk about his work in elevating the role of fathers in communities of color. Check out a speech he made at the Chicago Mayoral Inauguration in 2015. Miriah also had the opportunity to take a photo with Dr. Melissa Merrick of Prevent Child Abuse of America (left photo). It was a fan-girl moment.

Finally, Miriah ended the trip with a lunch meeting with Ellen Walsh from Baby TALK (right photo). During that time Ellen and Miriah discussed First Steps use of the curriculum and training experiences. That discussion led to condensing the Baby TALK training and further aligning the concepts to HFA to enhance the staff’s learning experience. The updated training will be available at the February Baby TALK Core.

The servant leadership model has long been praised for helping leaders authentically prioritize their people, resulting in increased performance and profits for their organizations. However, it has also been interpreted (and practiced) as a model that advocates subverting self in favor of others. Is there a way to reimagine the servant leadership model in a way that allows leaders to take care of themselves first, in order to effectively serve the team they lead?

In this webinar, you’ll learn:
  • How to reimagine the servant leadership model by applying resilience and self-care practices
  • Strategies for increasing self-awareness to improve leadership effectiveness
  • How to fuel your servant leadership effectively in order to collaborate for the greater good

Resources to Help Support Families

The My Child Care California website is a resource for families looking to easily find quality childcare and learn about how childcare can help their children grow and learn. It can be challenging for busy families to find high-quality, affordable childcare that they love and trust. There are so many places to look and so many options to review—how do you know what’s best for your family’s needs?

They have partnered with Childcare Resource and Referral Agencies (CCR&Rs) from every county in California to create an easy-to-search directory of childcare options and a simple glossary of childcare programs, philosophies, and terms. Caregivers can learn current information about childcare—from how to find quality childcare to getting help paying for it.

Their main goal is to help more California families get the childcare their children need. For more information, visit their website here

From our first FROG and throughout service, we learn about caregivers' goals to return to school and embark on new careers. Many parents are interested in pursuing a job as a medical assistant (MA). The field of health care is one of the fastest-growing job markets, and the career can be a launching pad for professional opportunities. The Laura Rodriguez Medical Assistant Institute offers part-time (7.5 months) and full-time (4.5 months) programs to become an MA. What makes this program unique is that is run by Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD). FHCSD offers a loan forgiveness program that waives tuition and fees for students who complete the program and perform full-time work for FHCSD as an MA for three years.

Building Resilience Through
Mindful Self-Regulation

Our thoughts and actions affect how we feel. By changing distorted thinking and dysfunctional behavior, we can change our emotions. In Nixie and Nimbo we explore some tools children can use to control their anxiety rather than letting it control them.
