Gifts of Hope: A Weekend of Light and Connection

What an incredible weekend of light, hope and community!

This year’s Gifts of Hope Market was a beautiful reflection of the Advent light—the light of Christ, of community and of generosity shared with others. With twelve remarkable partner organizations and both in-person and online shoppers, the impact was extraordinary.

We are thrilled to announce this year’s total:

$24,055.05 was raised in less than 48 hours!

What an amazing outpouring of support for our partners who bring hope to neighbors near and far.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who brought First Lutheran’s Welcome and Mission Statements to life:

  • To our Greeters, who offered hospitality with warmth.
  • To our Table Mates, who learned the partners’ stories and helped share them.
  • To our Roamers, who kept everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
  • To our Cashiers, who handled purchases and made giving seamless.
  • And to the Community Collaborations & Connections Team, whose planning and coordination made the market possible.

Beyond the gifts themselves, something even more meaningful happened: conversations blossomed, stories were exchanged, connections deepened and the Welcoming Space was filled with a spirit of generosity and belonging.

The video above captures those moments—joy, community and connection—reminding us that this Advent season invites us to “lift our eyes” and watch for hope breaking in.

Thank you to every volunteer and shopper whose kindness lit up this year’s market. You helped make the world a little brighter.

If you would like to continue supporting our partners, you can explore the Gifts of Hope Online Catalog anytime. Hope isn’t just shared in December—it can be spread all year long.

Embrace the Wonder of Advent

Advent has a way of catching us off guard. Just when we think we know what to expect, grace shows up quietly—sometimes softly, sometimes suddenly—reminding us that God often works “out of the blue.” This season, we’re leaning into those surprising moments of wonder and holy interruption that reveal God’s presence in unexpected ways.

Each week, we gather for Holden Evening Prayer, a mid-week pause that brings calm and reflection into the busyness of December.

Services are offered at noon and 6:30 PM on Wednesdays—including today and December 17—and are also available by livestream in the evening. A simple meal of soup follows at 12:30 PM, with dinner served from 5:30–6:30 PM.

Families will find a special welcome at the 6:30 PM service. Ms. Laura, our FaithTrek Coordinator, invites children to the PrayGround in the Sanctuary, where they can participate in worship in ways that are engaging and meaningful.

And if you would like to lend a hand, we would be grateful for your help supplying soup for our Advent meals. Providing a crockpot of soup for one of the weeks makes a big difference and lightens the load for our Fellowship Committee. Sign up online to let us know when you can assist. Thank you for helping extend hospitality to our community!

Get Ready to Be Amazed! Christmas Talent Show On Sunday!

Mark your calendars and bring your holiday cheer—our Christmas Talent Show is coming up Sunday, December 14, at noon and you won’t want to miss it!

This is your chance to see First Lutheran friends and members shine, celebrate and share the unique gifts God has given them. From music and comedy to hidden talents you never saw coming, the stage will be full of surprises and Christmas spirit!

And of course… what’s a talent show without good food? Enjoy a delicious lunch featuring chili and cinnamon rolls (because it’s Nebraska and we know how it’s done!). Lunch is offered for a freewill donation, with every dollar helping support youth summer accompaniment trips and camp scholarships.

Come for the fun, stay for the laughter and leave with a heart warmed by the incredible gifts in our community. See you there!

Join Us for Christmas Day Dinner

Celebrate the joy of Christmas with good food and warm fellowship! Join us on Christmas Day at Noon for a delicious holiday lunch at First Lutheran. Meat and potatoes will be provided—just bring a favorite side dish or dessert to share. Singles are asked to bring one dish, while couples and families are encouraged to bring two side dishes.

We also invite you to bring a non-perishable food item for the Lincoln Food Bank to help support our neighbors.

Please take a moment to sign up online by Sunday, December 21, and let us know how many will be attending. This helps us ensure there’s plenty of food for everyone!

Bring your family, invite your friends—all are welcome as we celebrate Christmas together!

Help Brighten Our Sanctuary This Christmas!

The beauty of Christmas worship is made even more special by the glow of poinsettias adorning our Sanctuary—and you can be part of it! We invite you to contribute a poinsettia in honor, memory or celebration of a loved one. Each plant is $12 and your gift helps create a warm, festive space for all to enjoy.

Help us make our Sanctuary shine this season with the beauty of your thoughtful gift!To purchase a poinsettia, please submit your online order by December 15.

Our oldest-by-age member at First Lutheran, Ruby Augustine is still spunky, classy and sharp— a true spark of joy in our community! In her 106 years, she’s seen sliced bread invented, the first TVs, humans walk on the moon, phones go from rotary dials to smartphones and cars evolve from rumbling classics to silent electric rides. Through it all, Ruby’s smile and sparkle in her eye remind us to savor every day God gives us. Help us in wishing Ruby the happiest of all birthdays on Friday, December 12!
