Extending Welcome Beyond Our Walls: Introducing the Community Connections & Collaborations Team

At First Lutheran, we strive to be known as a community where all are welcome—a community where everyone is invited to experience God’s love, belonging and grace. Yet as we’ve reflected on who God is calling us to be, a deeper question has emerged: How do we extend the same spirit of welcome beyond our four walls—to our neighbors, our city and those who may never enter our sanctuary?

That question has been echoed in several important ways over the past year. The Church Council has been studying Leading Faithful Innovation by Dwight Zscheile, Michael Binder and Tessa Pinkstaff. In a recent update, Council President Rod Johnson shared this quote from the book:

“Congregations are facing challenges…. it takes more than a redesigned website, a new worship style or a building remodel to address what’s happening…. congregations must discover new ways to be the church in the twenty-first century…. fresh connections with people inside its walls and outside in the community.”

The newly formed Community Connections & Collaborations (CCC) Team is one way we’re putting that call into action. Created in response to a concept paper presented to the Church Council by lay leaders in August, the team combines two original ideas—an outreach team and an in-reach team—into one collaborative ministry that strengthens relationships within the congregation and builds connections beyond it.

Since August, the CCC team has been meeting monthly, engaging in open and thoughtful conversations about the needs of our congregation and community. Always asking where is God calling us and where God is at work in the neighborhood, community and beyond. The team’s shared goal is to help First Lutheran “discover new ways to be the church” — creating meaningful opportunities for connection, service and shared ministry both inside and outside our walls.

The team’s first major initiative is coordinating this year’s Gifts of Hope Market, coming December 6-7. While the market has not been under any ministry umbrella for several years, it remains one of our congregation’s most beloved and impactful outreach efforts. The team recognized its importance as both a benevolence and relationship-building ministry and has embraced it as a priority — recruiting volunteers, coordinating planning and exploring year-round partnerships with the organizations supported through Gifts of Hope.

Looking ahead, the team is exploring new ways to foster connection and service through fellowship and neighborhood groups, community drives or shared meals to address food insecurity and creative outreach like Friday Night Lights chili feeds in the fall.

The team also plays a vital coordinating role, bringing together ministries at First such as Social Ministry, Fellowship, Stewardship and Church Council, while giving a home to initiatives like Gifts of Hope, Wild Women and First Friday Jazz. Team members include Linda Bogenreif, Cindy Lilleoien, Lisa Culbertson, Terry Kruse, Barb Johnson Frank, Kari Hoeft, Lee Rockwell, Gene & Sherri Cotter, Jim Sandman, Sunni Richardson, Mark Wemhoff and Kathleen Simley—individuals already serving within many of these ministries.

Rooted in the congregation’s Vitality Initiative call to “accompany each other and others” by embracing, partnering, welcoming, discipling and advocating, this team is helping First Lutheran discover new ways to live as God’s people—connected, compassionate and open to where God leads next.

Gifts of Hope Market & Maker’s Workshop

You're invited to be part of this year’s Gifts of Hope Market, featuring a special table of handmade items by our talented congregation. Proceeds will support ELCA projects in South Sudan and Ethiopia. Items can include seasonal décor, jewelry, wooden creations, art, cards, toys, t-shirts and more—anything handmade and donated (no consignments). Please bring your items to the church by November 30 and leave them on the table in the entry or office along with the provided form.

Not feeling “crafty”? Join us for a Maker’s Workshop on Thursday, November 13, from 2:00–4:00 PM in the Upper Room. Materials and project ideas will be provided, with options for all skill levels. Bring your own project if you would like some help—or just come enjoy the creative fun!

Make Your Everyday Purchases Count Twice with Raise Right

First Lutheran is excited to introduce Raise Right, a new, ongoing fundraiser that lets your everyday shopping benefit our 2025 Gifts of Hope partners.

Here’s how it works: When you purchase a gift card from First Lutheran for one of the participating retailers, you use it just like cash at that store. A percentage of your purchase—anywhere from 1.5% to 14%, depending on the retailer—comes back to First Lutheran to support the 2025 Gifts of Hope partners.

You won’t spend more than you normally would. You simply use a gift card instead of cash or your debit and credit card when making your purchase—and your routine shopping becomes a gift of hope. And it doesn’t matter who actually spends the gift card—whether you use it yourself or give it as a gift—the giving still benefits the Gifts of Hope partners.

For example: If you purchase a $100 Walmart gift card through Raise Right and use it for your shopping, Walmart donates 2.5% ($2.50) back to First Lutheran. That money, along with other Raise Right proceeds, goes directly to our Gifts of Hope partners.

Think of the impact your everyday shopping can have:

  • Grocery shopping at Hy-Vee, Russ's Market or SuperSaver can help fill weekend backpacks of food for students in need through the Lincoln Food Bank.
  • Gas purchases at Casey’s can help someone get to job interviews through Matt Talbot’s Homeless Program.
  • Holiday or home shopping at Target, Menards, Home Depot or Lowe’s can help provide baby chicks, goats or honeybees through ELCA Good Gifts.

Raise Right is not a replacement for the Gifts of Hope Market on December 6–7. The Market remains the main opportunity to shop for gifts and support our GOH partners directly. Raise Right is an ongoing fundraiser that supplements the Market and can continue year-round, with proceeds directed to GOH or another new need that might emerge during the year.

Look for the Raise Right table in the Gathering Area on Sunday mornings starting November 16, 9:30–10:45 AM, to learn more and place your order for gift cards. Stay tuned for the list of selected retailers you will be able to purchase gifts cards for.

Make your purchases count twice—once for you (or someone you gift the card to), and once for those in need through the Gifts of Hope partners.
