Pastor's Corner

Friends,

I took a red eye flight Saturday night from Sacramento to Washington D.C. (with short stop in Phoenix) to get to the UMC Young Clergy Leadership Forum that begins this morning at the United Methodist Building, located across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Arriving in D.C. at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday with little to no sleep, I thought maybe I play hooky and sleep in until I got the news I couldn't check-in until Noon. So, off to church I went. I decided to attend worship at The Emory Fellowship, a historic and vibrant African American congregation of The United Methodist Church. As much as I wanted to get some shut-eye, there was no way that was going to happen at Emory -- dynamic music, liturgical dance, communion, interactive worship, and a fiery sermon from a guest preacher, a Black Baptist minister.

The pastor's appeal at the end was for folks to commit themselves to supporting the mission work of the church, namely affordable housing and food insecurity. His call and response was, "From the Seats, Into the Streets." This congregation has already built affordable housing units on its property forever transforming the church and the community. Still, the pastor's eyes is on what is next for them.

Is God calling us from our seats and to what streets is God calling us to? What new work is before us? What transformation are we called to be part of? See you soon!

Stewardship Team announces Stewardship Campaign theme, "1-4-3 for Year 143"

On Sunday, October 20, the Stewardship Team announced this year's Stewardship Campaign theme that connects our upcoming 143rd year as a congregation with a quote from Mister Rogers, "It takes one letter to say 'I' and four letters to say 'love' and three letters to say 'you'. 1-4-3. I love you." You can read the pastoral letter regarding the campaign here.

Each week of the campaign, we will watch a short video in worship that shares the experiences of a few members. To engage the congregation, folks are invited to write their own answer to the question of the day featured in the video. The question for 10/27/24 was How does pledging to First Church express your love?

  • My pledge shows my love for this church – may it help sustain paying for our wonderful staff and pastor, for everything that helps keep the building open se we may continue to share God’s love with ALL who are in need.
  • I get to hear great sermons, enjoy this community, and enjoy a potluck once in awhile.
  • I get to support the church for a portion of 143 years.
  • Pledging shows my love by allowing First church to plan its budget to know where its money goes and how far it can be stretched.
  • I have a lot of things I like to spend my money on so giving to church shows how it is higher on my priority list.
  • I’ve enjoyed the fellowship in this church and appreciate the outreach of this church to people in need.
  • I feel very blessed – all my life. Therefore, I feel responsible to do what I can.
  • Supporting the church means it is important to me.
  • It shows that I love and appreciate all that the church does. I know that Jesus loves me, and with my gift of money, I can return that love.
  • My pledge helps the church support “Helping Hands”.
  • I am confident that the pledge to First Church actually furthers the mission of Jesus to be a servant to the people.
  • I pledge because it helps the church do what it does for others and the love that is returned to me as well. It is a cycle of love.
  • I pledge to help the church and community and to make a difference.
  • To help support our community and people in need.
