Pastor's Corner

Friends,

This past week I finished reading Rufus Jones Essential Writings by Kerry Walters. Rufus Jones (1863-1948) was a philosopher, Quaker theologian, and a professor at Haverford College, where he taught Howard Thurman, which is why I picked this book up at the used bookstore.

These selections from various writings from Jones' life were a great glimpse into his understanding of the Christian religion, his Quaker tradition, and communion with God. Here are a few quotes that have kept me pondering...

  • "The essential fact of religion is love, and love is impossible apart from relationships."
  • "Inward Light, if it is to be real, something more than a phrase, must be something seen and felt and known. Light is only light when it is apprehended and responded to by an awakened consciousness aware of it."
  • "We find Him (God) [sic] when we enjoy beauty. We prove Him whenever we discover truth. We are with Him and in Him whenever we love with a love which rises above self and gives itself to another. He is there whenever we suffer and agonize over sin and wrong, and dedicate our will to make righteousness and goodness triumph."
  • "The person who belongs to the Kingdom (of God) is a person in whom God lives and rules, and through whom the contagion of a love, caught from above, spreads through the world."
  • "... religion is essentially social. It is an affair of a beloved community."

May this Season of Lent be a chance for us to cultivate that Light of God that is within us through what we Methodists would call means of grace: prayer, fasting, community, scripture, acts of love and mercy.

Stacks of Pancakes & Loads of Fun at annual 'Pancakes with the Pastor' Fat Tuesday Fundraiser

On Tuesday, before we all started our Lenten fasts on Ash Wednesday, we had our fill of a delicious pancake lunch (thanks Robert, Paul, and Dave) and fun with a few rounds of "silly" Bingo (thanks to Ruth Ann for coordinating). With 36 participants, we raised $688.00 to benefit First Church Roseville. We hope to have another Bingo fundraiser in the future. Keep your eyes peeled for more info.

Ash Wednesday, Lenten Season brings three Roseville congregations together

This year, we partnered with our siblings in the faith at Incarnation Anglican Church and Bethel Lutheran Church for Ash Wednesday, Holy Week gatherings, and for our ecumenical Lenten campaign 'Alms for The Gathering Inn'.

Ecumenical Lenten Campaign - Alms for The Gathering Inn (TGI): In partnership with our siblings at Incarnation Anglican and Bethel Lutheran, we are collecting Alms during the Season of Lent to help our friends at TGI acquire a new commercial fridge for their Roseville shelter. Almsgiving is an ancient religious practice and act of loving sacrifice. Instead meeting our wants, these funds can be used to help meet the needs of others. For example, instead of ordering take-out or a cup of coffee, set that money aside for this campaign. Note that pledges or plate offering goes to the general budget or their specified designation. In your bulletin, there will be a special Almsgiving envelope that you may place in the offering plate.

From the Church Historian, Phoebe Astill - 'The M.E. Church Roof, Ceiling Damaged by Fire.' "In June 1930, the roof of the church received some damage. Members of the church board had been burning grass in the yard of the church. They had finished their work and were about to leave when the blaze on the roof was discovered. They tried to put out the flames with a garden hose but it didn’t stop the fire. It was believed the rapidity with which the fire took hold in the roof was due to collections of shedding from nearby cottonwood trees. Due to the fast work of the fire department the building was saved. The damage was completely covered by insurance. The By Scouts of Troop 1 gathered and carried out all the troop records as well as the pews from the church. The members met in the Moose Hall (which was just across the tracks on Lincoln St) until the repairs were made to the roof and ceiling of the church. Some of the members recently of this time in history and wanted to know what had happened."

Bear Witness to God's Love! - First Church plans for Placer Pride: The Faith in Action Team, with the approval of the Church Council, has reserved a booth for the Placer LGBTQ Pride event on Saturday, May 17 at Roseville's Royer Park. This is a great way to demonstrate our support for the LGBTQ Community and bear witness to our faith that at First Church all means all. If you would like to be involved in planning our presence there, please reach out to the Pastor.

“Sock it to ‘em” Socks & Jackets Collection: Help us keep our community warm this winter. We are accepting donations of new socks and new/gently used jackets to give out during our Monday Meal. Bring them to worship or during the week. if you have any questions, please see Kathleen or Pastor.
