2019 Thornwell Lectures

It seems like everything today depends on remembering our PIN numbers. From ATMs to websites to even using our phones, these little numbers mean so much in our day-to-day lives that it can feel like the most important thing to know is our PIN.

Our annual Thornwell Lecture Series this summer offers a different perspective. The Bible tells us that the most important thing to know is not a thing at all, but a person. Above all else, we must know God.
Accordingly, the theme of the 2019 Thornwell Lecture Series is “Knowing God.” Our speakers will explore and unpack the various attributes of God. When theologians speak of the attributes of God, they are referring to his various characteristics such as love, wrath, justice, mercy, etc. God’s supreme revelation of himself is Jesus. So knowing God means knowing him in Christ, by the power of the Spirit for everlasting delight.

Why should we study God’s attributes? Because, as we mentioned at the outset, knowing God is the most important thing for creatures like us. You can’t love someone well that you don’t know! So God wrote to us in his Word to tell us what he is like. Think of this study as an invitation to get to know the most interesting, inspiring, complex, inexhaustibly lovely person in the universe. Knowing God is our highest privilege as Christians!

The Lord has provided an outstanding lineup of speakers this year. We will hear from Biblical authorities like Al Mohler, H.B. Charles, Jr., Burk Parsons, and Steve Lawson, in addition to many other wonderful expositors of God’s word, beginning June 2. Please join me in praying that God would awaken in us a deep joy as we get to know better the one who loves us so well. Have a great summer!

Your fellow debtor to grace alone,
Gabe Fluhrer
Associate Minister of Discipleship

Help the Green Apron Brigade

Please consider joining the Green Apron Brigade, a team of volunteers devoted to hospitality and food service at lunches, dinners, special events, and receptions. On May 12, tables will be available in the Atrium and in the Palmer lobby to sign up or obtain more information about our activities. Contact Susan Gottshall at sgotts1824@aol.com or Keith Cook at kcook@firstprescolumbia.org for more information.
Mission Trip Opportunity

An informational meeting will be held on May 19 at 7:15 p.m. in the Frank C. Hill Center regarding a fall (early November) mission trip to Austria, which will be a ministry to children during the church retreat of New City Wien Church (associated with missionaries Dennis and Cynde Morgan). Contact Victoria Andes with any questions at victoria@theandesfamily.com.

World Witness also has mission trip opportunities. Visit their website ( worldwitness.org) or contact Shelia Osborne ( sheliao@worldwitness.org) for details.
Volunteers Needed!

We will hold a First Responders Appreciation Luncheon for City of Columbia and Richland County police, fire and EMS workers on Friday, May 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Jackson Hall, and we are looking for volunteers to help with serving, clearing tables, and greeting the first responders who come to the luncheon. This would be excellent community service for students! If you would like to sign up to help with this special event, please contact Barbara Shealy at bshealy@firstprescolumbia.org.
