Mental and Spiritual Health on the College Campus

Sometimes there are statistics that just stop you in your tracks. One such stat came across my desk late last spring. It was from a book called The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. They reported that the number of suicides on college campuses has gone up by 75% for men and 100% for women over the past four years alone! That is an absolutely heartbreaking statistic.

As a result, and in conjunction with the College Ministry, I will be speaking on this issue on the University of South Carolina campus on October 15. Lukianoff and Haidt identify three “untruths” that Americans have begun to teach their children which have led to this crisis:

  • First, what doesn’t kill you, makes you weaker. That is to say, all negative experiences should be avoided because they only cripple.
  • Second, our emotions define our reality. In the midst of this post-modern moment, the only thing that we can know as real is what we experience right now in this moment.
  • Third, the us vs. them mentality. In order to make sense of a world that does not operate the way we intuit that it should, we have to make someone the bad guy.

We will be evaluating all three of those statements from a Christian perspective. Plus, we will add one more - a vitally important addition in my opinion. Culture tells us to focus inward; Scripture tells us to focus upward. Upward is the direction of faith. Upward is the direction of love. Upward is the direction of hope (1 Corinthians 13:13), and hope is what these students desperately need.

I would ask for your prayers for this event. The topic is extremely sensitive. It has touched the lives of many of the students already, including our own students last fall. But the need is great and the Gospel has so much to offer at moments like this that we can’t afford to be silent.

Yours in Christ,
Josh Squires
