Becoming the Family of God

What should a conference on Christian parenting aim to accomplish? There are probably lots of good answers. One is to build up parents’ confidence in the Lord. Another is to consider some practical ways by which parents might instruct and lead their children. Still another is simply to remind parents that God’s ability to enlighten the mind and renew the will extends even to the challenging job of raising kids.

We pray that this year’s parenting conference—we’re calling it “Becoming the Family of God”—will accomplish those ends. Our speaker is Dr. Mark Ross, a professor of theology at Erskine Theological Seminary. Many of you know Mark already (he was on our ministry staff for twenty years), and you know he has a particular gift for encouraging his listeners by turning their attention to the character and ways of God. Mark’s teaching and preaching always gives you greater confidence in God’s word and its power to enable what it commands. If you’re a younger parent at First Presbyterian Church and you don’t know Mark, drop what you’re doing and reserve a spot.

We want to stress, too, that it doesn’t matter where you happen to be on the path of raising children. Married couples with no kids (yet) will hear much from which they may profit in years to come. Parents with grown children will as well, since the work of parenting doesn’t end when kids leave home. And moms and dads currently in the thick of things will find themselves both instructed and strengthened.

The conference will take place on Saturday, October 5. We will have dinner at 5:00 p.m., two teaching sessions with a dessert break, and be done by 8:15. Childcare will be provided. Chef Rich has something special planned for the occasion. You can sign up on the church app or website, or at one of the sign-up tables around the church campus between Sunday services. Come and enjoy being a Christian parent.
