Upcoming Lifelong Learning Seminar

July 29, 1991, was my first day of work at Florida Manor, a 420-bed skilled nursing facility in Orlando. I arrived in the parking lot at 7:30 a.m. for my inaugural shift at 8:00 a.m. I had not had time to sit before the Word that morning, and I knew I could not start this new venture without hearing from Jesus, so I had brought along my Bible and 365-day devotional book. For July 29, the author, Sarah Hornsby, wrote, in part, “You can do much more than you ever dreamed…and you have My love to give.” The Scripture that followed was Philippians 3:13-14: “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

My role at Florida Manor was to be a friend to the 70 residents of the secured memory care unit and find creative ways to settle them when agitation heightened, comfort them when their confusion and fears produced seemingly inconsolable weeping, and bring joy into their lives. I also participated in Care Plan meetings, completed social history assessments for new admissions, administered a quarterly Mini Mental State Exam, and recruited and trained volunteers to visit the residents. Looking back on my time at Florida Manor, I marvel at how much I learned and how many times the Holy Spirit gave me the right words to encourage a resident or their family member.

On Friday, October 15, I will present Dementia 101 as part of our Fall Lifelong Learning Series. The information I will present is drawn from my experience over the past 30 years, 21 of which have been in Columbia. To find out more about upcoming Lifelong Learning seminars, please visit firstprescolumbia.org/events or our church app.
