Dear Colleagues:

Every year I have a couple of opportunities to meet with other dental school deans throughout the country. These are typically one-to-three day meetings that include lectures, seminars, and workshops. We hear and learn about the latest developments in professional education, advances in dental technology, ways to reduce student debt, and strategies to recruit faculty.

Although I gain many insights and much information from the formal aspects of these programs, I get the biggest benefit from the open sessions when we talk about our jobs and share how things are going at our schools. We often compare our experiences and ask each other questions about what makes our positions most rewarding and what could make them even better.

One subject that frequently comes up is the ability each of us has to work with dentistry-related agencies and organizations that are external to our schools. I hear all sorts of stories about the difficulties some deans have in interacting with these groups that can be vital partners. And while there are many reasons for limited engagement, one that is often mentioned is the lack of convenient and regular contact between the schools and the organizations and individuals who make the laws, define our scope of practice, and advocate for us.

This is one advantage our college has over almost every other dental school in the country, and it is something I often boast about. We are fortunate to be collocated with all the essential groups and organizations that help to shape the future of dentistry and that keep us abreast of "what's going on" with our profession. These include the offices of the Ohio State Dental Board, the Ohio Dental Association, the Ohio Department of Health, and the state legislature. All of these vital entities are within easy reach, making it possible for me and others in our college to maintain close working relationships with these organizations so we can contribute to the discussions when dentistry-related priorities are being set, decisions are being made, and laws are being crafted.

Such productive relationships are beneficial to all involved. They give our college "a voice" on issues that are critical to the future of our profession, and they allow our faculty to serve as resources for these entities by providing their expertise on dental education and oral health-related issues.

I have often said Columbus is the perfect location for Ohio's only state-supported dental school, and it is the optimal place to serve as a dental school dean. With all of these strategic advantages, it is no wonder that our college enjoys such continued success!

Happy New Year!

Other nomination remarks stated that she 'has a reputation for quality work in the college and with constituents across the university,' and that 'we are lucky to have her' as an employee."
