Dear Colleagues:

I have never experienced a Homecoming Weekend like the one we just wrapped up. It was packed with more events and activities than I could ever have imagined. Each gathering escalated the excitement and enthusiasm all across campus. And it lasted for four days!

Thursday afternoon kicked off the first-ever, university-wide celebration of endowed chairs -- more than 60 in total. Faculty scholars from our college and others were recognized for their achievements, and the benefactors who support those positions were also acknowledged. I was moved and inspired by the personal testimonials of so many gifted speakers. What a way to start the weekend!

That event was followed by the university's closure of its "But for Ohio State" Campaign. Under a tent that stretched the width of The Oval, I heard from students who expressed their gratitude to the generous donors whose gifts helped raise more than $3 billion in funds that will support student, staff, and faculty initiatives. I was so pleased to represent our college at this celebration of a colossal effort.

Friday opened up with our Post College Assembly event's debut as part of the university's Homecoming Weekend lineup. The day-long continuing education program offered a collection of outstanding speakers, and it provided the perfect venue to present our Distinguished Alumni Award. I truly enjoyed talking with so many of our proud alums, and I was especially pleased to see so many members of our Class of 1966 who returned to campus for their 50th reunion. I heard stories, answered questions about our students, faculty, and staff -- and shared the news about our plans for a new facility. It was a very special time for me.

Later that afternoon I provided our Dental Alumni Society Board of Governors with an update on the college, and I answered many of their questions. This group represents our 11,000-plus alumni, and they come from all across the country to offer their insights and expertise. They're outstanding leaders and I enjoy working with them.

On Friday evening, I attended a university event that celebrated the benefits of student scholarships. It was another proud moment for our college as we were recognized for the support we provide to our students. That gathering was followed by several other opportunities for me to connect with our alumni groups at reunion celebrations across campus and throughout Columbus. There were more stories to hear, questions to answer, and all of it increased the excitement that led up to the Friday evening Homecoming Parade. I watched the parade with our students, staff, and faculty as we anxiously waited for our float to move past the judging tent on High Street. Later that night, we learned we'd done it again! Our float won the first-place prize, and I could not have imagined a better way to end the day.

On Saturday - game day - we held our college's annual tailgate in the Postle Hall courtyard. Hundreds of our alumni were there, reminiscing about the good old days, talking with friends and former classmates, and getting ready for another football win. After the tailgate, my wife and I went to the game and we stayed to the very end, singing Carmen Ohio with all the other Buckeye fans.

I closed out Homecoming Weekend with the final university-sponsored event on Sunday afternoon, a celebratory luncheon for all of Ohio State's Classes of 1966. The gathering included performances by student musical and athletic groups; thoughtful comments from President Drake and representatives from the Ohio State Foundation; and a special appearance by Brutus Buckeye.

After it was all over, I said to my wife, "I can't believe how many great times I've had the past four days." I can only hope our students, staff, faculty, and alumni had a Homecoming Weekend that was as memorable and rewarding for them as it was for me! Go Bucks!

Dentistry Float Wins First-Place Prize in Homecoming Parade!

Each autumn, the College of Dentistry's dental hygiene and dental students work with faculty volunteers during a week of planning and building a float for the parade that kicks off Ohio State's Homecoming Weekend celebrations.

On September 30, the evening before the Homecoming football game, dentistry's faculty, staff, and students gathered on High Street to cheer on the college's float that featured Brutus Buckeye armed with a giant toothbrush and riding a stallion that galloped over Rutgers' Scarlet Knight. With its moving parts and giant replica of Brutus, the float was one of the most sophisticated in the parade, giving the college its second win of the top prize in the competition. The first-place prize includes a cash award of $1000,  which will be used to fund the construction of next year's float.

Dean Patrick Lloyd said, "This may be the most complex and creative float our students have produced yet, and I continue to be amazed that they're able to complete such a remarkable project in just one week." He added, "This is the second time our students' efforts have been rewarded with the top prize in this competition, and we're already looking forward to the challenge next year!"
Homecoming Weekend Brings Alumni Back to Campus

The College of Dentistry's Homecoming Weekend events held September 30 - October 2 brought more than 400 alumni back to campus. This year's special events included Post College Assembly, which offered a day of presentations on ways to implement an evidence-based dental practice.

The weekend's festivities included alumni reunion celebrations for the classes of 1966, 1971, 1981, 1986, and 1991. The college's newest group of Golden Buckeyes gathered for a luncheon with classmates and friends. Dean Patrick Lloyd presented an award and a Golden Buckeye pin to each as a recognition of their 50th anniversary as alumni.

The following day featured the annual tailgate held in the Postle Hall courtyard, where alumni and their families joined faculty and staff to kick off the OSU vs. Rutgers football game.

Thanks to all who participated in this special weekend of alumni reunion events!
