Hello Lions,
Well, the first week of school is in the books and it was a good one. It was wonderful to see all of our returning students. Their excitement at seeing their old teachers and reconnecting with their friends was filled with positive back-to-school vibes. It was also exciting to see our new students navigate their new surroundings as they settled into the Lion Pride. As I said in last week's newsletter, we are all looking forward to working TOGETHER to make this a great year!

This year's new start time of 8:30 am gives our students an opportunity to get a bit more sleep and also to get a healthy breakfast before school starts. Breakfast is served on campus every morning and we encourage all students to get something to eat before going to class. All meals (breakfast, lunch, and after school) are served to students free of cost. Although not required, families are encouraged to fill out the California Universal Meals form (attached in this newsletter) to see if they qualify to receive additional benefits like discounts for home internet service, free PSAT/SAT/ACT Tests, $5 AP Tests, and more.

The LV/LS mascot was busy this week welcoming students and, sometimes, roaming the office. We are proud of the work our Lion and all our ASB students do to create a positive culture at La Vista/La Sierra.

This week ASB played music and sold cold drinks and treats at lunch each day to start the school year off with spirit. They also organized a musical chairs activity today that had many students - and staff - hopping! Any student interested in joining ASB is encouraged to speak to Ms. Babarovic in room 3002 for more information.

The first LV/LS early-release day is next Thursday. Please see the early-release bell schedule for La Vista and the La Sierra Opportunity and ATP programs below. The hours for the La Sierra ABC Program will not change on early -release day and teachers in the Home/Hospital and iSierra Online Academy will notify their individual students of any schedule changes.

We have some exciting events coming up on the Lion Calendar. Club Rush is on Tuesday, August 30. This is a chance for all students on campus to sample the different clubs offered at LV/LS. Research shows that students who are involved in extracurricular activities do better in school and are happier so getting students connected to a club is a high priority for us. The after-school program also starts on Tuesday, August 30. The after-school program runs three days a week - Tuesday thru Thursday. Many extracurricular activities like eSports and regular sports will be offered and food, tutoring, and transportation are provided.
Have an amazing weekend Lions. Roar!

For the 2022-23 school year, FJUHSD was approved to implement Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) at Buena Park, Fullerton Union, La Habra, and La Vista High Schools. Parents with students who attend these schools will not be required to complete a lunch application form. Conversely, FJUHSD was not approved for CEP for Sunny Hills, Sonora, and Troy High Schools. While meals will continue to be served to students at no cost at non-CEP schools, the District will be encouraging parents who may qualify for free and reduced meals to complete a 2022-23 lunch application. The District Food Services team is here to support. Please contact us for questions or assistance at (714) 870-2820 or by email at [email protected].

Dear FJUHSD Families,
This past year may have presented a variety of difficulties for students and their families. Some of us, including our students, are experiencing fatigue in response to the pandemic and other factors. Some students are disconnecting (or disengaging) and may find it hard to motivate ourselves and engage in school. Before the pandemic, one in four may have needed help maintaining our mental health. Those numbers are on the rise and reaching higher levels due to limited in-person connections to people, places, and things that help us stay healthy.
As our district works in accordance with state and local guidelines to safely reopen campuses we know that the process is challenging and many in our community are in need of help.
If a student or family member is in need of support or are worried about a loved one, Care Solace can help students and their families find mental health and substance use treatment options matched to your needs regardless of the circumstance.
FJUHSD students, staff, and families can use Care Solace at no charge to them. Care Solace’s team is available 24/7 and can support students and families in any language.
