Major Fisher-Price Recall After 5 Reported Deaths

The CPSC and Fisher-Price announced a recall of more than two million Fisher-Price Snuga Infant Swings on October 10, 2024. There have been five reported deaths involving infants associated with the product between 2012 and 2022. The affected products were sold at Amazon, Toys“R”Us, Walmart/Sam’s Club, and Target from October 2010 through January 2024 for $160. The recall asks consumers to remove and destroy the headrest and body support insert from the seat pad. Fisher-Price will provide a $25 incentive to consumers who do so. The refund is inadequate to incentivize consumer participation and fails to emphasize the urgency of a recalled product associated with five infant deaths. Unsafe sleep environments accounted for 76 percent of the fatalities reported between 2019 and 2021. CPSC Approves New Safety Standard for Infant Support Cushions

By unanimous vote, the CPSC approved a new federal safety standard for infant support cushions to prevent infant deaths and serious injuries. The CPSC is aware of 79 infant deaths and 124 injuries between 2010 and 2022 associated with infant support cushions, with most injuries and deaths occurring among infants younger than three months. The majority of these deaths involved the infant support cushion being used in or on a sleep product, including an adult bed or mattress, a bassinet, crib, play yard, or on a couch, futon, or toddler bed. The new rule, which goes into effect in spring 2025, sets safety standards for infant support cushions to reduce the risks of suffocation, entrapment, and falls. Key requirements include firmness and sidewall angle testing, a 10-degree incline limit, prohibition of infant restraints, and strong, permanent warning labels. The only safe place for a baby to sleep is a flat, bare surface dedicated to the infant such as a crib, bassinet or play yard that meets the federal standard.

KID Talks Safety at Safe Sleep Summit

On October 19, KID's Nancy Cowles spoke on a panel at Safe Kids Worldwide's Safe Sleep Summit with the CPSC's Consumer Ombudsman Jonathan Midgett and Dr. Sam Henke. They spoke on system-level perspectives on safe sleep. Their talk went beyond increasing awareness; it looked more broadly at the underlying factors impacting safe sleep at the organizational, community, and societal levels. They discussed how organizational policies and practices and the regulation of safe sleep products can both facilitate and hinder progress. Read our recent blog about safe sleep.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

  1. Toilet Paper Roll Test: If a toy or part of it fits through a toilet paper roll, it’s too small for a child under three due to choking hazard.
  2. Recalls: Recalled toys and nursery products may still be found for sale, especially on secondhand markets, despite being unlawful. Check CPSC's website and SaferProducts.gov before gifting.
  3. Age Labels: Only buy toys that align with the child’s age range. Age labels are present for safety issues.
  4. Counterfeits Online: Online marketplaces may sell unsafe, counterfeit toys. Traditional stores are required to sell toys with a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC), confirming they meet safety standards. Beware of toys for sale that may be counterfeit.

KID Closing At Year End

We are sad to tell you that KID has made the difficult decision to close by year’s end. Fundraising, which has always been difficult, has become harder over the past few years. Also, our founders Linda and Boaz, who championed KID’s cause and our work for so long are ready to celebrate all our victories. KID has done what they envisioned we could – change the product safety system and save lives. Now, at 26, KID has grown up, something Danny didn’t have the chance to do. We will be working in the next months to make sure KID’s mission is carried on by all the consumer organizations and parent advocacy groups we’ve worked with over the years, including the monthly recall digest. Thank you for all your support over the years.
