Fitness trackers have become indispensable tools for some, but for those living with overweight or obesity, who are known to exhibit differences in walking gait, speed, energy burned and more, these devices often inaccurately measure activity.
Researchers publishing in Scientific Reports found current activity-monitoring algorithms that fitness trackers use were built for people without obesity. For example, fitness trackers accurately track those performing standard pushups, but for those who cannot drop to the floor and do them, but are doing wall-pushups instead, trackers do not count them.
The authors are in the process of creating algorithms that do accommodate for the overweight and obese.

Steve: There are two recent studies related to physical activity that I wanted to share with you.
A study from British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed how much exercise you need to offset the negative effects of sitting all day. Committing to a good 30-40 minutes of "moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity" at some point each day balances out 10 hours of sitting still, although any amount of exercise or even just standing up helps to some extent. Of course, if you get up and move around every 30-45 minutes, or stand for half the day, you could probably avoid having to do moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
A study from Frontiers in Psychology found that sometimes aligning workouts with your personality boosts fitness and slashes stress. The five personality traits were extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. While not all personality traits had a link to exercise enjoyment, several connections were uncovered by the study.
Extroverts tended to particularly enjoy high intensity exercise, such as high intensity interval training and a fitness test of maximum intensity cycling.
Those with a strong neuroticism trait preferred bursts of intensity rather than prolonged intensity. They also preferred not being monitored, such as not recording their heart rate while undertaking the program, suggesting that these individuals might appreciate being given space for independence and privacy when engaging in exercise.
Those who were conscientious tended to have a well-rounded fitness level, meaning that they tended to score more highly on aerobic fitness as well as core strength, and were generally more physically active. However, conscientiousness didn't predict higher enjoyment of a specific form of exercise. The authors say this might be because conscientious individuals tend to be driven by the health-related outcomes of engaging in physical activity rather than enjoyment.

| | Discarding Apathy Can Work Wonders | | |
A 52 year-old female came to see Steve after seeing multiple functional practitioners for lifelong constipation, anxiety, job stress, and apathy as she had not exercised in four years. She and her husband were also very insular.
Her diet was very good, albeit not geared towards her individual needs. The major tweak Steve made was for her to avoid corn whenever possible because it was an obvious reactor.
Steve reminded her that physical activity is critical for bowel movement consistency and stress reduction. Being less sedentary at her workplace would also be helpful.
Steve recommended targeted supplements for her gastrointestinal function, nutrient deficits, and anxiety.
They also discussed strategies for how not to bring her work stress home.
Immediately after the appointment, she stopped eating corn and started working with a trainer on a consistent schedule that fit into her work schedule. She soon saw muscle mass gain, but more importantly, her bowel movements became more consistent and she was better able to handle stress. She and her husband have become more social. Recently, she was confident enough to seek out a new job that was better suited for her.
She has been very consistent with her new lifestyle plan. Apathy lifted!

The American Chiropractor, July 2025, reports that strict rest is no longer the gold standard when one is diagnosed with a sports related concussion, now light exercise is prescribed. Athletes who sought care within seven days of injury, recovered an average of four days faster than those who delayed treatment.
Receiving neck alignment, deep neck exercises and eye exercises have been shown to enhance recovery to the brain. This improves coordination, stability, dizziness, headaches and other concussion symptoms.
The case of a 16 year old hockey player who sustained a concussion during a game was cited. He experienced dizziness, mild nausea, neck pain and difficulty concentrating. In the first 48 hours he was prescribed light walking and stationary cycling. He also went to a chiropractor and was prescribed spinal alignment, eye exercises and deep neck movement training for his treatment plan.
Concussions are a complex injury requiring detailed assessment and rehabilitation plans. Sports chiropractors have an important role to play as neuromuscular, skeletal experts in order to help athletes return safely to their sport.
