Five Audit Tips from Our Ace of Audits

Channel Fish Processing recently achieved the industry-leading BRCGS AA+ audit rating. This remarkable accomplishment was spearheaded by Greg, our Director of Quality Assurance Technical Services. Prep for your next audit with these tips from Greg, our Ace of Audits.

Keep pace with company growth.

Growing sales, especially sales to large customers, means growing needs for sophisticated quality assurance practices. As your organization expands, be sure your implementation of Standard Operating Procedures and staff of experienced, executive-level leaders with backgrounds in large-scale manufacturing also expands.

Engage the whole company in a commitment to quality.

Although Quality Assurance leads the audits for the facility, a BRCGS AA+ rating would not be possible if there was not a group effort across the organization, from floor crews to administrators. The maintenance team contributes through their work order fulfillment program, HR organizes staffing needs, and leadership is committed to financing quality assurance efforts, providing capital, and supporting continuous improvement. The entire organization has a role to play in committing the organization to quality. Regular communication across roles about the company's commitment to quality is key.

Strive for better, not perfect.

Food manufacturing carries with it a vital responsibility to keep the food supply chain safe. All audits assist companies in making corrections to improve their operations. Commit your team to make continuous improvement and show progress with each audit completed. Focus on making improvements consistently each day.

Cultivate your quality assurance team.

Channel Fish Processing is audited regularly by USDA, FDA, the local Department of Health, BAP, ASC, MSC, and some of our customers who require proof and support that this facility is producing product to their specifications. This represents a lot of work and preparation, so it is critical to keep the quality assurance team motivated and engaged. Create opportunities to visit as many world-class plants as possible. Reach out to colleagues in the industry. Participate in Food Safety Summits. Take courses, available online or in person, to learn about the latest quality assurance practices.

Find a way to embrace high stress situations with a smile.

When he is not leading Channel Fish Processing's quality assurance team, Greg enjoys sky diving and scuba diving. He has also cooked professionally at restaurants all over the world. Though enjoyable to Greg, these experiences may sound pretty stressful to someone without those passions. Getting comfortable in stressful situations gives Greg the practice he needs to be calm and collected (and even smiling) during potentially stressful audit situations. Lean in to your favorite high stress activity and stretch your stress management skills.

Good luck with your next audit!
