Five Caltrans District 2 Field Maintenance Employees

Awarded State’s Highest Honor for Public Servants

REDDING – The State of California recently awarded five Caltrans District 2 Field Maintenance employees with the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor. The ceremony took place yesterday (June 21) at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. These individuals were each honored with a Silver Medal of Valor for risking their lives to save others:

  • Jason Lofton, Highway Maintenance Worker, Yreka Maintenance
  • Brian Rubalcava, Landscape Maintenance Worker, Yreka Special Projects
  • Scott Davidson, Equipment Operator II, Hayfork Maintenance
  • Trevor Gipson, Former Equipment Operator II, Platina Maintenance
  • Jeremy Maraviov, Equipment Operator II, Hayfork Maintenance

“Our field maintenance employees are often the first on scene to emergency incidents on the state highway system,” said Dave Moore, District 2 Director. “These men exemplify bravery and selflessness and our entire District 2 family could not be more proud of their efforts and this well-deserved recognition.”

On the night of December 19, 2021, Jason Lofton and Brian Rubalcava located and helped to save the lives of two individuals whose vehicle went off a section of State Route 263, north of Yreka. A full summary of the incident is available here.

On the night of December 26, 2021, Scott Davidson, Trevor Gipson, and Jeremy Maraviov located and helped to save the life of a young man whose vehicle went off a section of State Route 3, south of Hayfork in Trinity County. A full summary of the incident is available here.

The State Employee Medal of Valor is the highest honor California bestows on its public servants. Since Governor Edmund G. Brown Sr. first presented the award in 1959, more than 700 state employees have earned that honor for displaying bravery, courage, and selflessness in the face of danger. A total of 23 state employees, including 11 from Caltrans, received the State Medal of Valor for 2023.
