Five for Five
August 2023
Five of the Top Stories at Five Counties this month!
If Life Gives You Lemons... Make Lemonade!
Maggie donated $200 to Five Counties from sales of lemonade.
Five Counties Children's Centre had a sweet surprise from little Maggie (pictured above at left). In July, she dropped by with a $200 donation to support children's treatment services at the Centre. Just like our staff member Linsey (shown above at right), we are humbled by Maggie's generosity. Maggie hosted a lemonade stand this summer to raise the funds. What an incredible gift from an incredible girl!
Thanks for Making Our First-Ever Little Lakers Night a Success

We were so thrilled to partner with the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers on the first-ever Little Lakers Night on July 27. The game offered a chance for attendees to cheer on the Lakers at their final regular season home game while supporting Five Counties Children's Centre.

Many of our kids/youth and their families took part, whether cheering in the stands. taking part in the pre-game ball drop or getting a 'behind the scenes' experience look at what it's like to be a Peterborough Laker. We also had many Five Counties volunteers and staff on hand, including taking part in pre-game festivities. Thanks to everyone involved who donated their time and showed their support for our kids!

Why Real Time is Better Than Screen Time for Kids
Little boy looks on a tablet screen
Kids can quickly rack up screen time, even though it doesn’t always add up to good results.

That's the point being made by Five Counties' Speech-Language Pathologist Ida Lloyd and Occupational Therapist Jessica McGrath in a new blog post. They argue that limiting the amount of screen time for kids -- especially for very young children -- allows them to experience real time, which is better for their growth and development.

"Play is how kids learn, and without that opportunity we do them a disservice. Real play allows kids to be imaginative, socialize with others, problem-solve, and learn new skills."

Being More Sensitive to the Needs of Our Children and Families
Five Counties is working to make the visitor experience even better for children/youth and their families who access treatment services at our sites.

As seen in this photo, we have installed sensory lighting in a number of our treatment rooms at our Peterborough site. This is meant to create a more calm and comfortable environment for kids like Ellie and their families when they come for treatment with our staff members like Jess.

For families accessing services at our Lindsay site (see video below), we have also created a new welcome video that details what families can expect when they arrive for their first visit.
