Five for Five

February 2026

Five of the Top Stories at Five Counties this month!

Re-Pete performance, as Next Gen Game is back!

Petes Next Gen Game

Mark Family Day on Feb. 16 by joining the family-friendly festivities taking place at the Next Gen Game with the Peterborough Petes.

Five Counties Children's Centre is thrilled to team up with the Petes for the 2026 edition of the game. Be part of the action, as tickets are just $15 and available through Five Counties or through the Peterborough Memorial Centre box office. Funds raised at the game support kids' treatment services at Five Counties.

Five Counties ticket holders can kick off the day with a free family skate from 11 am to 12:45 pm (helmets required). Doors reopen at 1 pm for exciting pre‑game festivities, including face painting by donation, a giant LEGO zone, and information about Five Counties’ programs. Puck drop is 2:05 pm.

During the game and period intermissions, fans can bid on amazing silent auction items like a signed baseball from Toronto Blue Jay player Daulton Varsho, passes to Medieval Times, and more.

Next Gen Game

Next Gen toques will be on sale for $15, and Chuck‑a‑Pep returns during the second intermission. Donation buckets will be circulated—bring cash to support local treatment services at Five Counties.

The Next Gen Game brings together many Five Counties kids, families, staff, volunteers, and supporters for an afternoon of hockey — all in support of kids’ treatment services at the Centre. What’s unique is that not only will Five Counties kids/clients and families be able to cheer from the stands, some will take part in different aspects of the game – including the opening puck drop, and taking on roles behind-the-scenes as coach, general manager, and PA announcer.

Byror and Brielle

Bryor & Brielle: Ready to drop the puck

Five Counties kids (and siblings) Bryor and Brielle will be taking to the ice at the Next Gen Game with the Petes.

They will be joined by their family to do the ceremonial pre-game puck drop. "Dropping the puck for the Petes means the world to me. I'm so excited and happy and can't wait for the big day," Bryor says.

Time to Rethink Therapy and realize that therapy happens at home, at play, all day, every way

You know your child best... and are their greatest strength and resource. When we Rethink Therapy, we see therapy happens everywhere -- not just with Five Counties clinician/staff member in Centre or in school, but all around us!

Rethink Therapy is the name of a new awareness campaign being launched by Five Counties in 2026. It aims to help parents, caregivers and families realize they are an integral part of their child's treatment journey.

Rethink Therapy

As our Occupational Therapist Ashley Parsons notes, the aim of Rethink Therapy is to highlight to families how everyday moments -- from mealtime to toothbrushing -- help to build a child's abilities, confidence and independence.

"Some families who come to Five Counties Children’s Centre may think their child’s therapy only happens in a treatment room or with one of our clinicians," Ashley says. "The fact is, this kind of thinking sells families short and leads to missed opportunities. Parents and caregivers know their child and their daily lives best. They are their child’s greatest strength, resource, advocate. and ally."

Read more of Ashley's thoughts on why families need to Rethink Therapy, and how Five Counties can help parents/caregivers make it happen with their child... at home, at play, all day, every way!

What's up doc? Plenty as pediatrician arrives in town

Five Counties Children’s Centre is pleased to welcome Dr. Chris Montgomery to our community. Dr. Montgomery is an experienced, well-respected Consultant Pediatrician who has been in independent practice since 1997. Dr. Montgomery sees infants, children and adolescents for a wide variety of medical problems by physician referral only.

Dr. Montgomery

At the end of 2025, Dr. Montgomery closed his long-time Oshawa-based practice to relocate it to Cobourg. Since the start of 2026, Dr. Montgomery’s practice is now based at Five Counties (800 Division St., Unit 2) in Cobourg, where it operates independently of the Centre.

Dr. Montgomery is no stranger to the area. Since Spring 2024, Dr. Montgomery has been working one day a month at Five Counties in Cobourg to see our clients and families, while supporting our Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Clinic.

Five Counties is grateful that Dr. Montgomery is joining the Centre on a more permanent basis, with the relocation of his pediatric practice to Cobourg. Dr. Montgomery will see patients four days a week in Cobourg – both those families he supports through his independent practice as well as Five Counties clients and families. Joining Dr. Montgomery in Cobourg will be his long-time office secretary, Bernadette.

An easier way to request personal health information

Accessing personal health information for Five Counties kids/clients just became a lot easier.

A new online Access Request Form is now available to use on the Five Counties website.  The form is designed with parents in mind, with the goal of making the process of requesting information for their child as efficient and accessible as possible.

This form is intended for parents only. If a third party (such as Children's Aid, school, physician, lawyer, community care providers, or others) requires information, they should follow their own established procedure for requesting info.
