Five for Five

May 2026

Five of the Top Stories at Five Counties this month!

Ready for School? Upcoming events can help kids with disabilities or exceptionalities adjust to class

As one school year winds down, preparations for the next one are ramping up, especially for families whose children with disabilities or exceptionalities are starting class for the first time this fall.

For the third straight year, Five Counties Children’s Centre is organizing Ready for School events across the region. These include events take place in:

  • Peterborough on May 30
  • Cobourg on June 6
  • Lindsay on June 13.

The aim of the Ready for School event is to help children from JK to Grade 3 more easily transition to school, especially if they face greater challenges due to physical, developmental or communication needs. For parents and caregivers, Ready for School can help them learn more about what their child can expect at school, classroom supports available to them, and how they can better advocate on their child’s behalf.

Arthur

Arthur is proof 'big happiness does come in tiniest packages'

At just three months old, Arthur was diagnosed with neuroblastoma wrapped around his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Despite such a daunting start, Arthur’s personality shines through — he’s curious, expressive, and full of spark. With early intervention and ongoing therapy at Five Counties, he’s building strength, improving mobility, and hitting milestones that once felt out of reach.

His family describes him as resilient and joyful, and every session brings new signs of progress. Arthur’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when kids get the support they need when they need it!
