Dear friends,
The story of Absalom Jones is a powerful reminder of faith shaped by perseverance and hope. Born into slavery, Jones purchased his freedom and became a lay leader at St. George’s Methodist Church in Philadelphia. There, he and other Black worshippers experienced repeated discrimination, including being required to sit in the gallery—and, in one painful moment, being pulled from their knees while praying. In response, Jones and others walked out, later founding the African Church, which became the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. In 1802 he was ordained a deacon, and in 1804 a priest—the first African American ordained in The Episcopal Church. His life bears witness to a faith that refused exclusion and remained rooted in worship, courage, and hope.
This month at St. Andrew’s, we have opportunities to engage that same tradition of truth-telling and faithful witness. In particular, I hope you will join us for Scarlett: Slavery’s Enduring Legacy in an American Family, a searching exploration of history, memory, and the ways the past continues to shape the present, and for God’s Trombones, James Weldon Johnson’s powerful poetic rendering of African American preaching, which proclaims the gospel with beauty, imagination, and moral clarity. These offerings invite us not only to learn, but to listen—to voices that deepen our understanding of faith, justice, and the hope God holds before us.
Peace,
Paul
