From No Fracked Gas in Mass / BEAT:
— Thanks to everyone who responded to our call for comments on the Eversource Tree Cutting proposals. Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) office has included many of our requests to require lots more information from Eversource on their tree cutting plans - and is requiring them to look at cumulative impacts! Not just from the two segments that we knew about, but for their entire set of lines!

No rubber stamp for Eversource this time. We'll keep you updated as the process moves into its next phase. In the meantime - stay vocal and visible!!
Gaslight; Another Great Video from Big Tentacle Media

Filmmaker Ben Hillman, maker of the Pittsfield Peaker Problem and Peabody Peaker videos, has released a new video on the Eversource pipeline proposal for Springfield & Longmeadow.

— Setting the record straight on fracked gas disinformation.

For decades, the oil & gas industry has sold the dangerous narrative that methane gas is natural, safe, and clean while fracking continues to harm the health of communities across the country and worsen global warming.

This will be an interactive event, and we encourage activists and leaders fighting fracking near their homes to share their experiences with messaging on fracked gas at the point of extraction!

Free public event. Hosted by Halt the Harm Network.

— Evaluating the Capabilities of Behind-the-Meter Solar+Storage for Providing Backup Power during Long-Duration Power Interruptions

Customer-sited solar+storage can help homes and businesses maintain essential activities during grid outages. A new report by Berkeley Lab estimates the performance of commercially available solar+storage systems in providing behind-the-meter critical-load or whole-building backup power during long-duration outages. Researchers modeled scenarios across a wide range of geographies, building types, and power interruption conditions.

The study also considers a set of 10 historical long-duration power outage events and evaluates how solar+storage could have performed in providing backup power during those specific events.

In this webinar, hosted by Clean Energy Group, report co-author Galen Barbose will present the findings. Free public event.

— Retrofitting without Displacement:
Tackling Our Climate Crisis & Housing Crisis Together

This event is primarily* for municipal officials and will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about steps that can be taken to equitably retrofit the existing housing stock in our communities. (*Others welcome too!)

During the event, expert panelists will touch on critical areas like affordable housing financing, legal structures around anti-displacement policies, and solutions to ensure that low- and moderate-income residents have access to energy efficiency retrofits. They will also break down new and existing funding opportunities for energy efficiency and building decarbonization.

Free public event. Hosted by MCAN, BEA, and HEET.

—— Hearings and Comment Periods ——

As recent Massachusetts climate and environmental justice legislation comes into effect, the state is re-examining regulations and public engagement processes. The effect has been a notable increase in requests for public input. To help get the word out, No Fracked Gas in Mass will be including posting these notices and descriptions or action guides to the issues in these dockets. We’ll continue fleshing out details, adding new ones as they come up, and refining the website arrangement, so check back often to see what’s going on.

Comments on FERC Winter Gas-Electric Forum
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
COMMENT DEADLINE: November 7, 2022

ISO-New England, our region’s grid operator, filed a “Draft Problem Statement and Call to Action on LNG and Energy Adequacy” with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). In response, FERC held a “Winter Gas-Electric Forum” in Burlington, VT on September 8, 2022. The 8 hour long forum was broken up into 4 panels, with a mix of energy industry, governmental, and advocacy officials.
FERC is accepting public comment on the Forum and ISO-New England’s statement.

This is a critical time to make your voice heard! Several voices during the forum argued for more pipeline capacity for New England, even though our demand has never again reached it’s peak back in 2006.

Any party wishing to submit comments regarding the topics discussed at the forum may do so on or before November 7, 2022.
