Transcontinental Bach

In a transcontinental collaboration, Executive Director Samantha Crownover, in Madison, catches up with Stephanie, in Manhattan, and Jeffrey, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She finds out what music they're turning to at the moment.

Then, listen to Jeffrey and Stephanie perform the final movement of the Flute Sonata in E-flat Major, BWV 1031, by Johann Sebastian Bach... or by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach... or by father and son together. Well, we don't exactly know who wrote it, but as Stephanie says, "At this point, who cares? The final Allegro runs a merry dance and has been one of our favorites for many years. Have fun watching me try to keep up with Jeff!"

At any rate, we offer this as an energetic and uplifting way to launch our three-week series of virtual Bach performances.

So how did they do it? Jeffrey recorded his part in his living room and sent it off to Stephanie. Stephanie recorded her part while listening to Jeffrey on earphones. The performance was assembled as if by magic by Dave Alcorn of Dave Alcorn Productions in Madison, Wisconsin.

For your meat and potatoes, we offer a performance of J.S. Bach's epic Sonata in B minor, performed by Stephanie and Jeffrey in 2015. We especially recommend the beautiful Adagio (movement 2) and the lively Gigue (movement 4).

And for dessert, we offer the sparkling Tritsch-Tratsch Polka by Johann Strauss II, as arranged by Stas Venglevski. Enjoy!

• an archived performance from seasons past featuring the artist
• a little dessert
