I was asked recently about my method of judging so the volunteers could judge their show. Did I have a judging sheet? Is it by a point system? What is the critieria? Classes? I said I don't use any of that. Huh? was his response.
This is my way...its the fairest way I know. I'm talking about casual shows for charities or just for fun. Not concourse. I couldn't begin to know where to start there.
I like top numbers, say 25 or so, depending on the show size, and in no particular order. Plus one best of show. Say 20% of the show comprises of moderns, then close to 20% of the awards should go to them. But they better be super standout vehicles and not just came from the showroom. So on with the classics cars and the classic trucks. It's all about balance.
If there is something highly unual, attraction getter, over-the-top, then that should get an award whether you like it or not.
Then you have to look for the "IT" factor. That completely comes from experience, not something that you can teach. Does the whole vehicle blend together? It's like decorating a room. You can't go modern and then stick a wood china cabinet in. Then you get closer and look at cleaniness & details. If the seats are full of stuff, then it's out. That's what a trunk is for.
If it's all original, take that into consideration. If its super rare, take that too in consideration. There is not a hard fast rule on judging, basically it comes down to what you like and what the overall show attendance is. I've picked lots of vehicles I didn't like but there was something about them that deserved recognition.
I encourage everyone that attends award shows, that these are just people, maybe knowledgeable, but probably not. They are doing the best they can, and in all fairness, deserves some respect for volunteering. If the award means a lot, then a show with professional judges with sheets and clipboards might be where you should go. Have fun, don't take it too seriously.
