What do you do when you collect too many classic cars & trucks? You open up a museum...of course. It is great when collectors are willing to share their passion, along with the historical significance that they represent.
When I travel, I try to include a museum in my activities. It is always a different experience. I got such an automotive education at the Henry Ford Museum & the Walter P Chrysler Museum in Michigan. The Hot Rod Power Tour took me to the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum in Alabama, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg in Indiana, and our very own Tallahassee Automobile Museum (which was much more than cars).
I am sure most are not profitable and do it for the enjoyment. Unfortunately, Florida has lost a few in recent years.
- Classic Car Museum (Sarasota)
- Museum of Speed (Mr Dora)
- Muscle Car City (Punta Gorda)
- Antique Car Museum (Ft Lauderdale), the largest collection of Packards & memorabilia
- Paquette's Historical Farmall (Leesburg), tractors, farm implements, antique memorabilia
But there are still some great ones that remains and frequently host car shows throughout the year; American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne and the Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine.
Allow a little extra time when traveling and take in a museum. You never know when they may disappear along with all the history they share.
