February 27 is National Retro Day and that got me thinking. Most of us think the past is better than the present, but it is really? I didn't think the 80's, which I remember most, was all that grand. And looking back at the clothes and hair, it better never come back in my lifetime.
I missed the fabulous 50's & 60's, when the cars were the stars, rock n roll was just beginning, and the world was full of color.
Each generation has it's own "retro" memories. I spent many hours nightly, twirling the cord, on the only phone in the house, screwed into the kitchen wall. Remember the dial? My Dad's olive green boat had an 8-track but my Nova was cutting edge with the under dash cassette deck and equalizer.
Mom's kitchen was all matchy-match in orange, yellow, and green. We kids lived off of the new TV dinners, Spagettios, and sugared cereal. Fruit...no such thing.
The hair was big, the clothes were big (including the shoulder pads), and women were breaking with family tradition. College, careers, and independence.
It'll be a few more decades before we see how today's generation remembers this decade. Will they think of it as retro? Or will it be forgotten and dismissed...like totally!
Time will tell...hopefully they'll keep cruisin'. Thanks for reading, Tara
