Read All About It!  New Online Math for Grades 2-5 to Use at Home!

Dear Flagstaff Community,

This year we have worked at looking at the higher level thinking standards that students need to be successful in math and embedding these into our math lessons.

With this in mind, we have recently acquired a ROBUST online tool from iReady for grades one through five that will allow students to gain important math skills, critical math thinking, problem solving, and math reasoning compatible to their individual needs.  This program is easy to use and provides personalized student instruction targeted to students' unique areas of needs with a high success rate to boost achievement. Explicit instruction and practice in math for the areas of Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry is all included. Interesting tutorials, lively and engaging games, and challenge math are all a part of each student's lessons. Skills are taught through engaging characters and real world scenarios. Students practice what they've learned and receive encouraging, corrective feedback to reinforce understanding. Students are assessed at the end of every lesson and teachers will be able to view student progress for usage, lessons they have taken and passed, and areas of strength and need in order to inform instruction.

Based on the results of the i-Ready Diagnostic taken in Fall, Winter, and Spring, students are automatically placed into student instruction customized to their placement levels. These online lessons provide a consistent best-practice lesson structure and build conceptual understanding, in addition to being engaging and fun for learners of all levels.

Teachers currently have access to the program and will be sending student logins and initial directions for getting started in their next parent letter.

Easy to Use! Fun! Boosts All Areas of Math!

It is recommended that students use the program a minimum of 40-45 minutes a week, and teachers are going to be i ntroducing iReady Instruction during the next few months in these various ways: during rotations or centers, after completing work, as part of the instructional time in math, and as enrichment, or in other flexible ways.  IReady Instruction is very easy to use because students just go to the iReady site and use their school login and enter their instructional program with just a click of a button.

Best of all, students will be able to use iReady Instruction at home on laptops, computers, and even iPads with a 10.0 operating system. Recommended time for each lesson is 20-30 minutes. Of course the more students use iReady Instruction - the more it will impact their 21st Century Math skills.

We would like parents and students to take advantage of this learning opportunity over the Winter vacation.

Next week on Thursday, December 14th, we are offering a Principal's Coffee at 8:30 a.m. in the Commons to demonstrate this program to parents and how it can be used at home! We hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend!
