WINTER BREAK
HAPPY HOLIDAYS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

CoreVirtues  Letter from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

We so appreciate you taking the time to fill out our Intent to Return form for the 2018-2019 school year at Flagstaff Academy. Of course, we look forward to having you return for another great year at our school. If you have concerns that might impact your decision, we're more than happy to discuss them with you and to provide support.

We've had a wonderful response from new families interested in attending Flagstaff Academy, and we'd like to let them know as soon as possible if there is room for their children. Your timely help in filling out and returning this form by Tuesday, January 16, 2018 will assist us in this process.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and your support. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at saguina@flagstaffacademy.org , or Sheila Strukel, Registrar, at enroll@flagstaffacademy.org .

Attention Preschool Parents/Guardians: Current preschool students entering kindergarten must fill out the Enrollment Application form on our website, if not already filled out.

Also, please do not add students on this form who are not currently enrolled at Flagstaff Academy.

Enjoy the weekend!

Sharon Aguina
Executive Principal

Core Virtue for December: Generosity and Service
The Gift of Giving

Giving - the best gift of all. December's core virtue is Generosity/Service . When we focus on these virtues, we teach that generosity means giving with an open hand and open heart, without thinking of getting something in return. Service is tied to generosity because we should give generously of ourselves, not just give stuff. It also means giving your time, attention, hard work, patience, kind words, and talents to help and encourage others. It is not always easy to treat other people kindly or respectfully, but a generous person does not let others' actions define their own. They choose to be generous instead of stingy, and kind instead of hateful, no matter how the other person responds and acts.
Helping others with a cheerful heart is generous service

Click here to view some slides used in school , which includes a link to a great TED-talk related to this topic.

Throughout the year, but especially at this time of year, parents often share their concerns about our "give-me" generation, and ask, "how do I help my children to enjoy giving instead of always receiving?" Here are a few suggestions from the Center for Parenting Education to make the concept and the act of giving a part of your regular interactions with your children. The linked article shares some strategies for teaching generosity through patience and modeling. The goal is to make the practice of giving a natural part of our children's lives. Speaking of which - Middle-school students, now is the time to apply for National Junior Honor Society, where you'll help to make the world a better place through your generosity and service!

December Dinnertime Discussion Prompts:
  • "Why do you think it's important to be generous?"
  • "What are some good motives to be generous? Bad motives?"
  • "How do you feel when you make a difference for others?"
Warm wishes to you and your family!
