LEADERSHIP LETTER: Gael Lester, Acting Principal, K-2
Happy Earth Day!

Dear Dragon Families,

Stewardship is a practice of learning about, caring for, and contributing to something that is bigger than ourselves, with generosity at its heart. As I've been visiting classrooms this month, there have been some wonderful examples of how students are learning about earth stewardship. Our third graders have been working hard in the LMC to reuse materials like cardboard to create arcade games for other students to play. Not only did they learn about reusing and recycling materials, but it was tied into an engineering project. Our kindergarteners have been learning about various kinds of land, water, and air pollution and what they can do to take care of our environment. They have also been participating in monthly service projects, and this month they are raising awareness and money through sponsorship in a water walk to help bring clean water to the people of Tanzania. A walk by our Greenhouse classroom and garden reveals the growth of early spring plantings, recycling plant waste into compost for soil, and bee boxes to care for our very important pollinators. Our student club, the "Green Team," has implemented the Food Rescue Table program here, saving useable food from being thrown out which creates unnecessary waste, and providing that food for students who may need it.

This Monday, April 22nd is Earth Day, which is celebrated around the world as an opportunity to focus on taking care of our planet, and all of its inhabitants. The theme for Earth Day this year is "Protecting our Species." It looks at the balance in nature and how we are all interdependent, as well as the intrinsic value of all living things. Specifically, we are encouraged to think about how we as human beings can make a positive impact and care for the living things around us. Some of us may wonder how an individual in Colorado can help save an endangered species on the other side of the world. With a little research, we can discover that the there are many ways to get involved with issues we care about. Helping animals is something so many children can connect with.

I encourage you to talk to your children about these topics and discover the excitement that can be ignited!

Have a great weekend,

Gael Lester
