CoreVirtues  Letter from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal

Dear Flagstaff Families,

This week students were able to spend time with the renowned John Fielder, who is a naturalist, conservationist, and nature photographer. Mr. Fielder critiqued photos of the advanced art students from Middle School. He carefully looked at each picture and told students everything that he saw in the photo that worked well (rule of thirds, focus, leading lines, pattern repetition, geometry, color and contrast).  He found something exceptional in every picture and then something to strive for in the next photo shoot. Students listened intently and were thrilled to hear his encouragement and acknowledgement of their work.

But the most important part of the day was John Fielder's slide shows in which he showed how he travels in the mountains with llamas carrying his supplies to take his pictures. The amazing story of his life was quite poignant and the most important thing that he told students was the time as a young man that he left his job as an accountant to pursue his passion and life's dream of being a photographer here in Colorado. He was so determined to succeed, he said, that he just didn't consider the risk of doing this courageous act. He also shared that his decision was based on the influence of an important teacher while he was in Middle School.

This message to the students is important, as it is to our excellent teachers, who make a difference every day in the future of each child. Having opportunities to spend time with experts is one of the most important learning experiences available to us, and we are glad that we were able to provide this for Flagstaff Academy students.

Have a great weekend,

Sharon Aguina
