LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Katie Gustafson, Middle School Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

What a beautiful start to April it has been! This is sure to be a busy month, and I wanted to share some exciting improvements we are making related to climate, behavior, and culture at Flagstaff Academy.

In February, a group of staff members came together who were a part of a leadership development group Mr. Granger taught last school year with the goal of reviewing the non-academic aspects of our school, including character education, Core Virtues, restorative practices, Dragon Links, and more. These important pieces of educating the whole child are part of the framework called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which is supported by the U.S. Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Education. The goal of this endeavor is to decrease undesirable behaviors, increase positive behavior, and recognize the true Dragon spirit!

As part of this process, we are inviting our families to participate in a review of the Core Virtues, which are an important part of our climate and culture, and written into the charter of our school. Over the years, they have evolved into a very large set of virtues that have been unclear and difficult to maintain effectively with students. Our PBIS team is seeking the input of all stakeholders to narrow down these options to a more manageable number of virtues that can be regularly reinforced and support the greater PBIS program. This survey is also being provided to students in grades 3-8 and all staff members. This survey should take you less than two minutes to complete.

To rank, click on a virtue and arrows will open up on the bar. Move the virtues up and down, ranking them highest to lowest with your highest ranking virtue at the top. When they are arranged in the order you prefer, click Submit.

The Core Virtue survey will close at 4pm on Wednesday, April 10th.

Please look for more information from our PBIS team before the end of the school year. We know Flagstaff Academy is an amazing school and we look forward to continually improving our climate and culture!

With questions about the PBIS team, feel free to contact me directly.

Take care,

Katie Gustafson
Principal, Middle School

Hello Dragon Families,

The Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) testing will begin next week for grades 3-8, as well as end-of-year testing for all grades. We are so excited for students to show what they have learned this year. Preparation and learning has been happening all year and we're confident that our students are ready to do their best!  Some tips that can help your student during testing include:

  • Getting a good night's sleep
  • Eating a healthy breakfast
  • Hearing words of affirmation and confidence that they've "got this!"
  • Arriving to school on time during testing
You know what your child needs best, and we encourage families to stick to their normal routines. We do ask that you try to not make appointments or plan any vacations that would require your child to miss days they are scheduled to test. As always, we're willing to work with you as much as possible, as we do understand that emergencies happen.

We believe in your children as much as you do, and we know it will be a successful testing season. If you have questions regarding assessments, please feel free to call me at (303) 651-7900.

Thank you for partnering with us,

Jessica Warner
Director of Academic Programs

Join the Board of Directors!

APPLICATIONS DUE TODAY, FRIDAY, APRIL 5 by 5PM (MDT)!

The Flagstaff Academy Board of Directors Elections Committee is now accepting applications for Board of Directors positions.

Members of the Board of Directors are volunteers responsible for providing oversight and governance for Flagstaff Academy in accordance with the mission and charter of the school. Board members help set and approve the school's annual budget, define school policies, help guide the academic mission, and oversee the work of the Executive Director and academic leadership.

This year we are seeking three (3) new members to join the Board of Directors. W e have a particular need for Directors who have business management, legal, financial, or educational expertise . But most importantly, we are seeking people who have a passion to serve, work well as a team, think critically, are willing to learn, and will make decisions for the betterment of the school as a whole . We have had men and women from all walks of life serve successfully as members of the Board.

Serving the Board of Directors can have a very meaningful impact on our school, so please consider applying! Applications are available on Board of Directors Elections webpage, and are due by Friday, April 5, 2019 at 5:00PM MDT. If you have any questions about the elections process, please email Leah Herrera at lherrera@flagstaffacademy.org.
