LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Wayne Granger, Executive Director

Hello Dragons,

What an amazing seven days we have had. As if it wasn't enough seeing the amazing, creative, and inspiring STEM Fair entries from our students last Friday, this week we also got to see our young minds in action in our annual Spelling Bee, our VEX Robotics teams taking home multiple awards and already qualifying for the State Competition, our youngest Dragon Kindergartners in their first concert, lunch served by the principals, as well as a very special visit from author Kim Tomsic, whose book The 11:11 Wish is a huge hit in fifth grade. As well, today our CyberPatriots program is participating in a competition! But one of my favorite activities, and one that has grown enormously, is our Hour of Code program.

Hour of Code Week, now in our third year at Flagstaff, is a worldwide initiative to expose children to computer programming and computer science. Our students, who excel at coding, participate in this worldwide event. But what makes this week so special is that our middle school programming students teach coding to every grade level, from kindergarten to their own peers. The ultimate sign of mastering a topic is to teach it and seeing the way our youngest Dragons look up to their middle school mentors is truly where the magic happens.

Here are some highlights from the 2018 Hour of Code Week:
  • 70 middle school programming students taught either their peers during the December Late Start day, or the elementary students from grades K-5th during the rest of the week.
  • Fifth graders have requested that "Hour of Code" be added to "The Daily Five" (one hour of their choice of reading activities).
  • Local business StickerGiant provided stickers for every participating student for the third year, showing great community support.
  • Mr. Pugh led a classroom management team for all the middle school student teachers, which included CHAMPS and how to handle classroom disruptions.
  • Flagstaff Academy student population is one of 683,146,552 students in 180 different countries who participated in the 2018 Hour of Code Week.
Thank you to our incredible students and staff for supporting this program, as well as all the rest of the remarkable array of activities that occur throughout the building.

Go Dragons!

Wayne Granger
Executive Director
