LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Katie Gustafson, Principal, Middle School

Dear Dragon Families,

I hope your students enjoyed a great Valentine's Day yesterday! What a fun day we had sharing friendship and camaraderie throughout the building with classmates, teachers, and staff! On the heels of a long weekend, I wanted to share a little information about the love I have for middle school education, and how fortunate we are to have such a strong preschool through eighth grade program here at Flagstaff Academy!

In November, I submitted an extensive application for our middle school to be considered as a Colorado Trailblazers School to Watch. The "Schools to Watch" program is sponsored by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform and identifies schools who demonstrate academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, cultural equity, and sound organizational structure. In partnership with the Colorado Association for Middle Level Education , the Schools to Watch committee reviewed our application and moved us on to the next application step. In January, our middle school was visited by a team of middle school administrators from four different school districts and spent the day visiting each classroom, observing the teaching and learning in our middle school; meeting with teaching teams who were working on data analysis and writing alignment; and interviewing school administration, a group of parents, and a group of students. It was a hectic, but fun day to show off Flagstaff Academy!

One of the most remarkable moments of the visit was when I sat in with a group of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who were asked to share their middle school experience here. Our students represented us so eloquently and I was proud to hear all of the wonderful things that students said about their classes, teachers, and the opportunities they've had at Flagstaff. At the end of the day, the head of the committee commented that on most school visits, students talk about the extracurriculars outside of school as what they look forward to most. She was so impressed that our students gushed about what they were doing during the school day: band, technology classes, collaboration between teachers and units, and our daily walking break, just to name a few!

While we won't find out until March if we are awarded a "Schools to Watch" designation, I believe this opportunity has only made our school stronger. I am grateful to the teachers, staff, and parents who sat on the "Schools to Watch" committee with me a year ago, evaluating our middle school program. I know Flagstaff Academy has the most amazing middle school out there, and we will continue our efforts to meet the needs of young adolescents, with the strong foundation built by our elementary school.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Flagstaff Academy's StuCo has accepted the challenge of helping find a cure for Blood Cancers through Pennies for Patients!

Dates: Monday, February 25- Friday, March 8

Our school is joining over 27,000 schools across the nation to make a difference in the lives of Blood Cancer patients. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults under the age of 20.

Starting Monday, February 25 , our school will be working to reach a goal of $3,000.  Our students are tasked with collecting spare change on their two-week journey to help find a cure for Blood Cancers in honor of local students and current patients.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and  Flagstaff Academy is sponsored by our local Domino's Pizza. If the school raises at least $750, then the top earning class will win a pizza party. By simply donating change through Pennies for Patients, students are able to watch the donations add up, and learn that even a small effort can make a real difference in the lives of others.

All donations must be completed by Friday, March 8. GO DRAGONS!
