LEADERSHIP LETTER: Kevin Pugh, Dean of School Culture
Celebrating National School Counseling Week

This week we celebrated National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, and our Dragons got in on the fun! The purpose of this week has been to highlight the tremendous impact school counselors can have in support of our students' academic success and social-emotional success. At Flagstaff Academy, the role of our counselors is much broader than the traditional "guidance counselor" role many of us are familiar with from our school days. School counselors are truly holistic educators who provide lessons for life, meeting the needs of our students with their expertise and training as licensed counselors.

As recently as eight years ago, Flagstaff Academy had no counselors...only a Dean of School Culture who came with a counseling background. Recognizing the need, we created two full-time counselor positions to meet the diverse needs of our Dragons, as well as to support our teachers and staff in learning new strategies and skills for student support. We were ahead of our time.

The growth of school counseling is immense right now, with hundreds of schools in Colorado currently looking to create and fill their first-ever school counselor positions. It's about time! Some view the fact that we've had full-time counselors for almost a decade as a luxury. We view that as our educational responsibility, but we recognize the challenges many schools face in trying to recruit and hire qualified school counselors. The shortage is not a myth, and the needs are increasing, which is prompting mill levy funding for many schools and districts to create and add school counselors to their staff. One Colorado school district alone is aiming to add nearly 75 full-time school counselors this year.

So, please join  us in recognizing the value of school counselors in general, and especially our own. I'm fortunate to work with Jantrey Meyer every day, and I'm so grateful she's part of our team. We look forward to bringing our newest counselor on-board soon since Mrs. Mulholland moved out of state, and are working diligently to find the right person to fill this important role.

Have a great weekend!

Please remember that students are not to be dropped off prior to 7:45 a.m., unless they have morning activities such as 100 Mile Club, Band, or Breakfast Club, etc. There is no supervision as our staff is not on duty until 7:45 a.m. and when temperatures are very low, it's not safe.  For more information on our General School Policy and Procedures, please refer to page 17 in the Flagstaff Academy Family Handbook

General School Policy and Procedures
Office Hours:  The school office will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless the school is on a special schedule, such as Late Start, holiday, in-service, or half day. The school office is open for limited hours throughout the month of June and is closed during the month of July.

Playground Hours:  Due to safety and liability concerns, the playgrounds are not open prior to 7:45 a.m. S tudents are not permitted to be dropped unsupervised at school prior to 7:45 a.m. There is no staff available in the case of an emergency prior to 7:45 a.m. If parents need earlier drop off, Dragon Flight should be used. After school, the playground may be closed due to Dragon Flight usage and state child care program licensing requirements.
We have a number of key events happening in the upcoming months that need lots of volunteer work to make happen. Here's how you can get involved:
