LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Gael Lester, Acting Principal, K-2
Dear Dragons,

Diversity is a beautiful thing. To embrace it is to have the heart of an explorer. I have often thought about how boring life would be if everybody thought the same way, dressed the same, ate the same foods, spoke the same language, looked the same, and believed the same way as I do. I absolutely love to see the diversity of humans that walks through the front doors of Flagstaff Academy every morning. Our students are unique, each in their own way, and I want them to feel valued, celebrated, and welcomed each day.

This past Monday, we had the privilege of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Dr. King is one of the most well known leaders of the civil rights movement in our country. His approach of using non-violence for social change and creating a coalition of conscience among those who were moved by his message still inspires and motivates people today. This week, teachers throughout the school led students through age appropriate activities and used stories to teach about Dr. King's legacy. These lessons introduced concepts about respecting people who are different, helping to dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about people we see as different from ourselves. Having that acceptance and respect for others is part of what creates a culturally responsive school for our family of Dragons.

What does it specifically look like to be culturally responsive? Sociologist Dr. Caleb Rosado, who specializes in diversity and multiculturalism, describes seven important actions:
  • Recognize the abundant diversity of cultures;
  • Respect differences;
  • Acknowledge the validity of different cultural expressions and contributions;
  • Value what other cultures offer;
  • Encourage the contribution of diverse groups;
  • Empower people to strengthen themselves and others to achieve their maximum potential by being critical of their own biases; and
  • Celebrate rather than just tolerating the differences in order to bring about unity through diversity.
With this in mind, please mark your calendars! This year, Flagstaff Academy PTO's  Festival of Cultures will be held on Friday, March 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and you are all invited. Join us for this celebration of the cultures of the world as represented at Flagstaff Academy. The evening will include special performances, information booths, traditional clothing, and food sampling. Last year some of the countries represented were: India, China, Mexico, South Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, and Denmark, to name a few. The Festival of Cultures is FREE, and a TON OF FUN!! For more information, or to volunteer to host a booth or offer a performance, click on this link. This is one of my favorite Flagstaff Academy community events...I hope to see you all there!

Have a great weekend,

Gael Lester
