Dear Parents,

I was thinking today about how hard being a parent is - and it never stops being hard! Unfortunately, our kids don't come with owner's manuals, darn it - it would make some things so much easier! But what are some things we can do as parents to reinforce our values and morals with our children, while also helping them develop the tools to make those hard life choices when the time comes?

One great way to help your kids with social situations is to present moral dilemma or social situation scenarios to them. It should be a time where you think through all the possible ramifications of actions and words. It is also a time for you to reinforce your family values. This is a great way to help your child develop perspective of the world and practices those executive functioning skills such as emotional control, self-monitoring, and flexible thinking.

I used to use the cards in the car (yes, there are some ready-made for you that you can find on Amazon). It seemed like I was always driving kids to and from various practices, games, performances, etc. For me, having them captive in the car was a good time to really dig into discussions about how they would handle certain situations. You can also designate one day a week that you hold the discussions around the dinner table - whatever works for you and your family.

Being a kid is hard these days, what with social media, online gaming, etc. Helping your child develop the skills needed to navigate complex social situations will give them the confidence they need to make difficult decisions and will reinforce the values and expectations you have in your home.

The Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley 2017 Encore Awards

The Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley has scheduled the 10th Annual Tribute to Teachers for Friday, May 5. We encourage our entire Flagstaff Academy community to nominate our excellent educators for this prestigious award! 

About the Encore Awards
This awards program, sponsored by the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley, provides the opportunity for students, parents, community members and business partners to recognize and honor individual teachers at the Pre-K-12 levels in the St. Vrain Valley School District who exemplify excellence in teaching. By paying tribute to the achievements of teachers who have an extraordinary impact on the achievements of students, the Foundation and the community hopes to pay tribute to the accomplishments of all teachers.

Award Winners
One teacher from each St. Vrain Valley School will receive Encore recognition. At least two other teachers from each school will be honored as finalists. The Encore Awards are presented annually at the Tribute to Teachers celebration.

Nominations are due no later than Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Nomination forms can on the Education Foundation website, or at the front office. 
It's Time for Spring Track and Field!

2017 Track and Field Sign-Up Information: Track registrations are open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. 

Registration Week:
Monday, March 6-Thursday, March 9

Please complete a registration form that includes jersey top size with a check to Flagstaff Academy for $55.00. Registration forms can be found here, on the Dragon's Athletic website or can be picked up from Mrs. Salgado.  There is no practice/meetings during Spring Break, March 27-31. You can also find the most current season schedule on the Dragon Athletic Website.

The season is six weeks long and practice will begin on Tuesday, March 14th. 
2016-2017 Activity Fees are Still Being Accepted!

Yes, your Annual Activity Fees were due on October 1st, but if you haven't paid them yet, we will continue to accept payments! Annual Activity Fees go toward purchasing essential items such as:
  • Student workbooks
  • Consumable classroom supplies
  • Software licensing for technology programs
  • Buses and tickets for field trips
  • Elementary specials program materials
  • Middle School electives
  • Special educational guests
  • Community school supplies
  • (copy paper, tissues, paper towels, disinfectant wipes, etc.)

Or pay with cash or check, payable to "Flagstaff Academy." Partial Payments also accepted. 
Families eligible for Reduced/Free Lunch are eligible for reduced or free student activity fees.

Student Activity Fees payments are non-refundable.

Late parents will be charged $1.00 per minute/per student that they are late. After 15 minutes, they will be signed into Dragon Flight, and required to pay the annual registration fee and $20 drop-in fee. Please consider volunteering to help the after school runs!

About the 100-Mile Club: The 100-Mile Club is a club open to all students at Flagstaff Academy. The 100-Mile Club gets students moving before, during, and after school with the end goal of reaching 100 miles by the end of the year. After they register, students are welcome to come to any and all practices!  

Parents and Guardians! 
In order for 100-Mile club to be successful we are in need of parent volunteers. Please sign-up here to help! 
The LMC needs toilet paper rolls, paper towel tubes, cereal boxes, and old t-shirts for Makerspace projects! Please drop off at the LMC and thanks for your help with this great addition to our curriculum!

Calling all Dragons! 

Check your pockets, car, and sofa cushions for any spare change for Pennies for Patients, sponsored by our Student Council! 

The fundraiser runs Monday, Feb. 6th-Friday, Feb. 24th.  

Money will be collected in each classroom and donated to the local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Colorado. 

The winning grade level will receive a pizza party!

We'll be donating ALL Lost and Found items on Friday, February 10! 

If you're missing something from your child's closet, please come to the front desk, sign in, and claim your items. Even if you don't think you're missing something, we encourage you to take a look! Also, it helps greatly if you label your child's items with fabric pen markers. Thanks for your help and cooperation!

We have officially entered cold and flu season! 

Protect yourselves and your children from getting sick by drinking lots of fluids and getting plenty of rest. If you question whether your student should stay home from school refer to:
When to Keep your Child Home, located on the Health Clerk page at the Flagstaff Academy website.

It's also peak season for head lice, which happens twice a year in September and January. Both times are after an extended break when kids come together, happy to see their friends, and forget about the "no trade" rule. Please discourage your children from sharing hats, scarves, brushes, etc. More information is available on the  Head Lice page located on the Health Clerk area of the Flagstaff Academy website.

Great things are coming our way! 

We are working on a new and improved way for our volunteers to  sign up, sign in and view our volunteer opportunities. We're preparing the "soft launch" for the week of January 30th-February 3rd when we'll be launching a new  Volunteer Management Software System!  

Our volunteers will be able to view our volunteer opportunities, sign  up, and enter their hours from their mobile device, tablet, laptop or desktop! Stay tuned for more details!

Flagstaff Academy PTO Festival of Cultures

What is the Festival of Cultures?
This yearly event is a celebration of the cultures of the world and especially those represented at Flagstaff Academy. The Festival of Cultures PTO committee invites parents and their children to host a "Country Booth."

Country hosts and performers needed! Share a country with Flagstaff Academy!
Deadline to submit is Sunday, February 12, 2017
      • No experience necessary!
      • Multiple families may host a country
      • World booklet, country maps and country signs are provided
      • Share the cuisine of the country - bring a dish or beverage.
      • If you hosted a country last year, you can host it again!
      • You can choose any country or culture!
      • Share a country you lived in, visited or know about!
Examples of countries previously represented:
Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ethiopia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Native North America (Kiowa & Chickasaw), Nepal, Peru, Philippines and Scotland.

Important Reminders: 
  • Please remember to put the student's name, grade and TEACHER in with all Box Tops in a sealable bag/envelope. Box Tops with no teacher name will be included in the general Box Top fund.
  • Please continue to trim the Box Tops prior to submitting them.
  • Please only include NON EXPIRED Box Tops. Box Tops do expire!!!
  • Please note that eBox Tops will not count towards these totals! Although, we appreciate all eBox Top submittals, there is no way to track all of them to a specific classroom. eBox Tops will be included in the school totals, so please submit them. Only actual Box Tops that are turned into the teacher will count towards these classroom awards.

Dragon Flight is excited to offer Kid's Night Out. Please mark your calendars for the 1st Friday of every month starting February 3rd. From 6:00-10:30 p.m., students will be in a safe, fun, and friend-filled environment.
Parents/Guardians can enjoy a night in or a night out on the town.  Students are safe and in a comfortable environment.
