LEADERSHIP LETTER: Jessica Warner, Director of Academic Programs
CMAS Testing and Our Students' Success

Dear Flagstaff Families,

This year's Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments will be administered Monday, April 8-Thursday, April 18. Make-ups will be administered between Friday, April 19 and Friday, April 26. Students in third through eighth grades will take CMAS tests in English language arts and math. Students in the fifth and eighth grades will also take the CMAS science tests.

The statewide assessments are aligned to Colorado Academic Standards and are designed to measure real-world skills, like critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills that will help our children be prepared for success in college and careers.

The 2019 CMAS results are used for our school's accreditation rating that is delivered to our school each fall. But most importantly, the CMAS is a valuable tool that teachers and parents use to support students' understanding of grade-level subject matter at the end of the school year. Families can use the scores to begin a discussion with their child's teachers about their academic strengths and areas for improvement; together, everyone can decide how to best support students' needs. Score reports for parents include detailed breakdowns of specific skills that can help you determine which skills to reinforce at home.

Additionally, teachers use the scores to determine how to best support students and enhance learning for all.  Because the scores reflect high expectations for what students should know and be able to do, and are aligned with the demands of today's global economy, teachers can use the scores to plan instruction and enrichment for students in the coming year that prepare students for life beyond high school. Our school uses CMAS results to make improvements to instruction, identify needed resources, and develop additional support and enrichment in our programming.

In order to be in compliance with the Colorado Department of Education's expectations for student participation and to best determine areas of need for Flagstaff Academy students, we are aiming for a 95% student participation rate and encourage all students to take the CMAS assessment.

The testing schedule is designed to minimize impact to instruction in the classroom. Students will still be learning grade-level material during this assessment window. Most testing begins in the morning, so attendance and on-time arrival is very important to ensure that we can complete the assessment and move back into instruction each day. However, if your student has an illness or other unforeseen circumstance that impacts his or her testing schedule, please know that we will work with you to ensure that testing is completed with minimum impact to your student's day.

You will need to come into the office to give written permission in order to opt your student out of testing. Emails or phone calls will not be accepted. Opt-out forms will be available at the front office counter beginning Tuesday, April 2.

Thank you for partnering with us,

2018-2019 Flagstaff Academy Parent Survey
YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On  Monday, March 4th , you received an email from Dr. Josh Packard and the
Social Research Lab  inviting you to take the 2018-2019 Flagstaff Academy Parent Survey. Please take 5-10 minutes to provide us your valuable feedback to continue improving Flagstaff Academy to serve your family.  The survey period is open through Friday, March 22nd.

We have some really fun incentives for classes who have the highest survey return rates - the top elementary and middle school classes will get to have a "Free Dress" day!

We count on your feedback and thank you! Go Dragons!
Join the Board of Directors!

The Flagstaff Academy Board of Directors Elections Committee is now accepting applications for Board of Directors positions.

Members of the Board of Directors are volunteers responsible for providing oversight and governance for Flagstaff Academy in accordance with the mission and charter of the school. Board members help set and approve the school's annual budget, define school policies, help guide the academic mission, and oversee the work of the Executive Director and academic leadership.

This year we are seeking three (3) new members to join the Board of Directors. This year we have a particular need for Directors who have business management, legal, financial, or educational expertise . But most importantly, we are seeking people who have a passion to serve, work well as a team, think critically, are willing to learn, and will make decisions for the betterment of the school as a whole . We have had men and women from all walks of life serve successfully as members of the Board.

Serving the Board of Directors can have a very meaningful impact on our school, so please consider applying! Applications are available on Board of Directors Elections webpage, and are due by Friday, April 5, 2019 at 5:00PM MDT. If you have any questions about the elections process, please email Leah Herrera at lherrera@flagstaffacademy.org.
