CoreVirtues  Letter from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal

Dear Flagstaff Families,

I wanted to make sure to send out a message wishing all of you an enjoyable Spring Break. I hope you're able to have a well-deserved opportunity to rest, relax, connect with family, and to prepare for the busy end of this school year. While we are all anticipating when the sun begins to shine again, days become longer, and students get to spend more time outdoors - I'm also filled with thoughts of important things that must be accomplished in the next few months.

Now is when students make their most gain academically. Times like Spring Break are also a good time to boost skills through leisurely reading at home. Wide reading is one of the best predictors of future success at school and work. Magazines, journals, novels, and non-fiction selections are the window to the world for our students.

In an article by Dr. Andrew Johnson, Professor of Literacy at Minnesota State University, he states: "Of all the research-based strategies described, wide reading is perhaps the most effective and the easiest to implement. Extensive reading has been linked to improvement in general knowledge, vocabulary, spelling, verbal fluency, and reading comprehension."

A website that students have been introduced to in class is www.mackinvia.com . It can be opened on any browser and students can enter the site using flagstaff as the login followed by dragon as the password. They can then create an individual login in order to select a "favorites" section from thousands of online selections. MackinVia provides easy access to ebooks, audiobooks, databases, and videos, is mobile- friendly and can be used in the car or when traveling.

Here is some information about "W ide Reading Strategies":
  1. Provide access to variety of reading material throughout the home, including fiction and nonfiction books, and periodicals. It's important that there is also a variety in text difficulty so even lower level readers can find materials to enjoy.
  2. Provide students with access to online reading materials. With students who are more technologically savvy than ever, it is important to offer access to both online and traditional paper texts. For example, teachers can sign up students for online free periodicals or help them find blogs that interest them.
  3. Take students to the library to view tempting selections and check-out books.
The  more  students  read , the better they  read . The better they  read , the  more  they comprehend. The  more  they comprehend, the higher the achievement.
Reading  widely builds  important  world knowledge and ensures that students acquire additional vocabulary, both of which are critical for overall  reading  comprehension.

We also recommend the following resources for parents that highlight reading benefits:  www.cde.state.co.us/standardsandinstruction/rwc-fastfacts

Just a reminder that when we return from Spring Break, our annual CMAS (Colorado Measure of Academic Success) Assessments will begin. The testing window is from April 9-27 th .

Have a great break!

2018-2019 Board of Directors Elections

Join the Board of Directors!

The Flagstaff Academy Board of Directors Elections Committee is now accepting applications for Board of Directors positions. At the end of this year, we will be saying goodbye to two members, Chris O'Hara and Brendan Meuse, who have dutifully served for three years. We are thankful to each of them for their many hours of service and the role they each have played in shaping Flagstaff Academy.

Members of the Board of Directors are volunteers responsible for providing oversight and governance for Flagstaff Academy in accordance with the mission and charter of the school. Board members help set and approve the school's annual budget, define school policies, help guide the academic mission, and oversee the work of the Executive Director and Executive Principal.

This year we are seeking two (2) new members to join the Board of Directors. We have a particular need for Directors who have legal, financial, or educational expertise. But most importantly, we are seeking people who have a passion to serve, work well as a team, think critically, are willing to learn, and will make decisions for the betterment of the school as a whole. We have had men and women from all walks of life serve successfully as members of the Board.

Serving the Board of Directors can have a very meaningful impact on our school, so please consider applying! Applications are available on the school's website, and are due by Friday, March 30, 2018 at 5:00PM. If you have any questions about the elections process, please email Paul Shoning, Vice President/Elections Chair at pshoning@flagstaffacademy.org.
