LEADERSHIP LETTER: Wayne Granger, Executive Director

Hello Dragons Families,

It finally looks like summer break! The weather the last week definitely put a damper on some of our outdoor activities, but everyone adapted well. Thank you to everyone for another great school year. There were so many milestones and achievements - here are just a few of the 2018-2019 highlights:

      • Flagstaff Academy Middle School Recognized as a Colorado Trailblazer "School to Watch"
      • Our Middle School Choir achieved top scores at the SVVSD Choir Festival and our Jazz Band participated at the Greeley Jazz Festival at the University of Northern Colorado.
      • State Robotics Champs and World Championships participants
      • Future Problem Solvers Receive Top Honors at State Competition and Set to Compete at Internationals
      • New EnVision 2.0 math curriculum Implementation
      • Regional and State STEM Fair Competitions
      • A number of staff receive Master's Degrees
      • And so much more!
Looking Forward
Thank you to all the parents who completed the School Accountability Committee (SAC) Parent Satisfaction Survey. This survey provides valuable feedback from our parents on how we can improve. Look for the results of this year's SAC Parent Survey coming in early summer! Internally, I also conduct a similar survey of staff so we can improve as an organization and an employer. In addition and new this year, I implemented a Pulse Survey system this spring that provides opportunity for staff to provide frequent feedback on matters that have the greatest impact on their workplace and classrooms.

Not surprisingly, a common theme, from both families and staff, emerged related to behavior and the negative impacts it can have on classrooms and the overall climate of our school. Even prior to this confirmation from the surveys, our leadership team was already working to implement improvements system wide. Here are some key ways we look to improve next year:
  • Mrs. Gustafson is leading a large, cross-functional team of staff members, teachers, counselors and leadership in building a comprehensive Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) system for next year. Our Dragon PRIDE will be on display early and often next year.

As part of the move to our PBIS system, we will revise our Code of Conduct as needed, continue and deepen staff training of CHAMPS behavior expectations, as well as implement a school-wide behavior tracking system that provides constant monitoring of behavior trends so that our staff can focus efforts for maximum improvement.

  • Seeing an increase in needs for mental health supports in our building, we are currently in the process of seeking a part-time School Psychologist. The School Psychologist will provide additional support to our Counselors and Dean related to mental health and behavior causes and interventions.
All of these improvements are brought forth with the intention of minimizing the impact of poor behavior to the classrooms and educational environment. This will not be a quick fix, but a strategic organizational focus with the intent of making incremental improvements that are sustainable and effective. Our Dragon PRIDE will come through.

Thank you for your support and feedback to always get better.

Have a great summer!
