LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Kevin Pugh, Dean of School Culture

Dear Dragons,

During morning drive line this week, two first-graders approached me and said, "Looks like there must have been another shooting or bombing or something, right Mr. Pugh?" They must have noticed the surprise on my face (I wasn't expecting to hear that from little ones), because they followed it with, "you know, because the flag is down again, right?"

This matter-of-fact observation from some of our youngest Dragons was a painful reminder that they see and hear the ugliness in our world despite our best efforts to shield them. So then, what does it communicate to them when we aren't talking about this painful elephant in the room? What does our silence on the topic say? That it's not important? It's just...normal?

No. This is important. It is not normal to have domestic terrorism and pretend that nothing happened. We will not normalize this by staying silent. How can we help our children and ourselves respond to the hate-motivated shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh? Or the racist shooting at a grocery store in Kentucky? Or the mail-bombs someone sent around our country after spewing hate-filled messages at minorities online? Three major incidents in 72 hours that all shared the same root: hate . Last Friday was also the day that Matthew Shepard was laid to rest at Washington National Cathedral, 20 years after he was murdered for being gay. To ignore these acts of bias-motivated violence is to accept them.

Rosalind Wiseman, in her Culture of Dignity blog, offers some resources that can help us to support our children around this. I've shared those and some additional resources with you HERE . In addition, I want to remind you that our Character Education curriculum contains many lessons and components that come right out of these resources. For over a decade, we've included social-emotional learning, anti-bullying, social problem-solving, restorative justice, diversity education, Peaceworks , and nonviolent communication in our curriculum. We will continue to educate our Dragons to build communities of dignity where disagreement is welcome and hate is vehemently rejected. We will continue to model courage and integrity in the face of bias-motivated and hateful acts, and will continue to create opportunities for Dragons to do good in the world.

Each year, our Dragons raise thousands of dollars to donate to the OUR Center in their efforts to support people in our community who are homeless. They get involved with initiatives like Pennies for Patients, a science-based service program connecting schools with blood cancer patients. At the 2018 VEX Robotics World Championships, our Flagstaff teams were recognized for how they stepped in to help other teams from other countries...even when they couldn't speak the language. Even our young Kindergarten students are getting involved in a variety great service projects. These are just a few examples of how Dragons don't just stand by...we find ways to contribute to positive change.

"If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. We need not wait to see what others do." - Mahatma Ghandi

Please don't hesitate to reach out for support in talking with your children about these recent events, and about hate in general. Faculty and staff are available to support all our Dragons!

Warmly,

Kevin Pugh,
Dean of School Culture
