LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Katie Gustafson, MIddle School Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

Flagstaff Academy has been a leader in technology education since our doors opened in 2005. Since that time, eleven new schools have opened drawing from the same areas that our Flagstaff families come from. We're proud to continue Flagstaff Academy's mission in based upon science and technology:

To develop students who are equipped to be well-rounded, ethical leaders
in the world community with a foundation based on science and technology.

To this end, I wanted to share some of the amazing things happening with our students and faculty as we continue to pioneer ever-changing technology and prepare students for jobs that don't yet exist. Here is a sampling of the excellent technology opportunities your students have access to every day:
  • Our addition of the new SmartLab in elementary school, bringing technology, engineering, and science to our Dragons every week.
  • Flagstaff Academy is sponsoring a total of nine Robotics teams this year, which are four more than last year (four Vex and five VexIQ). These teams are made up of elementary and middle school students.
  • Now in our second year, Flagstaff Academy again is sponsoring three middle school CyberPatriots teams, competing in the world of networking and cybersecurity.
  • The development of a comprehensive computer science progression in middle school to prepare students for programming and AP Computer Science classes in high school.
  • Participation in a school-wide celebration of computer science for Hour of Code, scheduled for the first week in December where middle school students will teach our K-8th grade classes on how to program using www.code.org.
  • Three Flagstaff middle school students have been selected to intern at the SVVSD Innovation Center on the aquatic robotic team.
  • Three middle school teachers are working on the robotics and computer science collaborative for SVVSD, which creates curriculum for schools that is aligned to national standards, with the intention of integrating into all content areas. This includes developing exit outcomes for high school graduates in robotics, engineering design process, and computer science.
Our students and teachers are paving the future!

We are very appreciative of our Board of Directors and Flagstaff Academy PTO for their continued support of these efforts. We couldn't keep the momentum without our parent support and countless volunteers.  Our Dragons continue to demonstrate and exemplify excellent in our community!

Have a great weekend!
