Dear Dragon Families,

As school counselors, we are committed to preventing and addressing bullying at our school. We want our school to be a safe place for all our students. Flagstaff Academy promotes  a safe and secure learning environment in which students are able to learn, grow, and develop. As part of our continued effort to provide awareness against bullying, we first teach students what bullying is and what bullying is not.

According to our Family and Student Handbook, bullying is repeated conduct that meets the following criteria:
  • directed at one or more students;
  • substantially interferes with educational opportunities, benefits, or programs of one or more students;
  • adversely affects the ability of a student to participate in or benefit from the school's educational programs or activities by placing the student in reasonable fear of physical harm or by causing emotional distress;
  • may be based on a student's actual or perceived distinguishing characteristic  or is based on an association with another person who has, or is perceived to have, any of these characteristics,
  • characterized by a power imbalance between the targeted student and the student who is engaging in bullying behavior.
Bullying is NOT...
  • Not liking someone (you don't have to like everyone)
  • Choosing not to play with someone
  • Accidentally bumping into someone
  • Asking or persuading other kids to play or do things a certain way
  • A single act of telling a joke about someone
  • Arguments/Conflict
  • Isolated expressions of unpleasant thoughts or feelings regarding others
  • Isolated acts of harassment, aggressive behavior, intimidation or meanness (often a result of a student's still-developing social skills, lack of impulse control, and/or lack of social graces)
We encourage you to talk with your student(s) about these situations and reach out for help when you are concerned. Our students understand what these behaviors look like and are encouraged to label a situation accurately (rude, mean moment, conflict, or bullying). We teach lessons on how to resolve conflicts peacefully and help facilitate restorative mediations and/or solution circles after conflict has occurred.

If you are worried that your child is being bullied, look for changes in your child. However, be aware that not all children who are bullied exhibit warning signs.  According to stopbullying.gov , some signs that may point to a bullying problem include:
  • Unexplainable injuries
  • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry
  • Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick, or faking sick or illness
  • Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating
  • Kids may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
  • Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school
  • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations
  • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem
  • Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide

Please reach out to us if you're concerned that your child is being bullied. We are here to help. With your support, we hope to foster a safe, educational school environment where all students learn about the harms of bullying, the importance of stopping bullying, and supporting increased awareness.
