LEADERSHIP LETTER: Wayne Granger, Executive Director

Hello Dragon Families!

Earlier this week, I was at the Colorado Safe Schools Summit presented by the Colorado School Safety Resource Center. Governor Hickenlooper issued a proclamation designating October as Safe Schools Month. As I was surrounded by hundreds of professionals from education, law enforcement, emergency management, and mental health, it was a great reminder about how much thought and energy our schools invest in keeping our students safe on a daily basis. It also reaffirms what a great job we do at Flagstaff Academy putting forth effort to create a safe environment for our students and staff.

As I have always said, my law enforcement background proves valuable in this area, but I'm always looking to get better. I also know that this is a team effort of our staff, students, and parents to work as a community to support each other and we work together everyday with the same goal - to make our school the safest it can be. These are just a few of the ways we work to foster a safe environment for our students and staff:
  • A modern access control and video monitoring system
  • Regular staff training and practice drills for emergencies
  • Driveline - Yes this is a safety program!
  • Two full-time Counselors and a Dean
  • CHAMPs classroom management training and support
  • Restorative Practices
  • Character Education
  • A well-trained and dedicated staff and volunteer base
  • Safe2Tell and Report A Concern systems
  • Ongoing partnerships with Longmont Police and Fire Departments
Throughout this month, you will hear from members of our team on the amazing work going on daily at Flagstaff Academy. I am so proud of the dedication of our leadership team, student support team, and of course our teachers and paraprofessionals, who work hard every day to make Flagstaff Academy a positive, safe, and encouraging environment where learning thrives.

Thank you to everyone for your patience regarding the unavailability of our West field. This project has spanned over a year with the subcontractor hired by SVVSD as part of the SVVSD Bond Project  failing to complete the job correctly or fix the  problems through the warranty process.

After numerous meetings with the district, the contractors involved, and the  Board of Directors, I am opening the West field for recess starting Monday, October 8th.

Needless to say, this has been a frustrating process exacerbated by the fact that Flagstaff Academy did not directly hire the contractors involved. There are still problems with the field that will require work next Spring and late into the Fall.

Thank you for your understanding and continued patience.

Wayne Granger,
Executive Director
Flagstaff Academy
