LEADERSHIP LETTER: Gael Lester, Acting Principal K-2

Dear Dragons,

We are off and running with a fantastic year at Flagstaff! Everyday I have the pleasure of greeting our  Dragons at the door as they arrive for school, and watch as staff and students make connections with one another. At our last professional development inservice, our elementary school staff spent a session discussing the importance and benefits of building relationships with students, mapped out student and staff connections, and shared practical ideas on how to deliberately build and cultivate those relationships. This kind of concerted effort is central to creating the positive school culture and learning environment that we all value and is a big part of building our family of Flagstaff Dragons.

This year, a major academic focus for the elementary school is our mathematics instruction. We've adopted the enVision 2.0 curriculum. Staff and students are settling in and adjusting to the new expectations and rigor of the content standards. In teaching the Colorado Academic Standards, teachers are helping students develop  mathematical understanding as well as procedural skill, with both treated as equally important.  We're excited to have this new resource that supports students in achieving what they should know, understand, and accomplish in order to be prepared for high school and beyond -- preparing them for the deeper thinking and reflection required of 21st century learners.

This week, teachers will be including more detailed information in their newsletters about math instruction and parent resources to help your student at home. One new resource that's available right now is the enVision 2.0  BOUNCE app . This app will give you a better idea of the step-by-step instruction students are receiving for each lesson. You will also have access to the "Another Look" and "Visual Animation Plus" videos.

As always, thank you for your support and partnership, as we strive to improve experiences and outcomes for all of our students.

I look forward to connecting with you at the Fall Festival tomorrow!

Gael Lester
Acting Principal, K-2

ATTENTION: October Count Day/Late Start

Wednesday, October 3rd is a LATE START DAY for Flagstaff Academy!

We are aware that many of you with students in the SVVSD have been receiving emails about Wednesday, October 3rd. While we know that SVVSD has cancelled the late start day for district schools, this day is still on our calendar as a LATE START DAY for our students.

As this is also the State of Colorado's official Student Count Day, it's very important for your children to attend school on October 3rd. Our state operating revenue is determined from our student count. Please support our school by ensuring your child's attendance, unless they are sick.
Student Council has put together a fun (and VERY colorful) way to show your Dragon Spirit!

Dragon Dash Fun Run Goals:
100% of families get pledges from donors + 5 pledges per student =
to help fund the PTO Annual Budget!

These funds go directly back to our school to pay for amenities not found elsewhere in the district.
Additionally, this year, 10% of net donations will go straight back to your student's classroom!
Last year, donations helped fund the Innovations Lab, coding software, a digital piano, posture chairs for music, library books, the bouldering wall, Colorado Mountain Club Outdoor Education, Chromebooks and many more awesome items!

The easiest way to help us reach our goals is through the SHARE feature on  funrun.com!
  • Make a Student Star video to share with Facebook Friends
  • Copy and paste the email template and then send to family, friends, and local businesses
  • Go to funrun.com from your mobile device, click share, and send texts to friends and family
