LeadershipLetter
LEADERSHIP LETTER: Kevin Pugh, Dean of School Culture
Hello Families,

Martin Luther King, Jr. stated: "Intelligence plus character...that is the true goal of education." Parent surveys indicate that our Character Education program is one of the top three reasons for choosing Flagstaff Academy. High school principals tell us they can spot a Flagstaff graduate on the first day of school...because of their character qualities. We've always taken character education seriously, and you may be interested to know a bit more about how we do it.

When we first started Flagstaff Academy, we developed our own Character Education curriculum built from the best parts of many other existing curriculum as well as the creation of our own unique components. We purchased and adapted from curriculum such as Peace Scholars, Safe & Caring Schools, PeaceWorks Education Foundation, In Focus, Core Knowledge-Core Virtues, It Takes Courage, Rachel's Challenge, The Power of One, and the University of Minnesota's Neurobehavioral Science Institute. We customized and adapted these resources to maximize the fit to our unique needs and culture, and we layered in learning about restorative practices. We secured a grant to kickstart these efforts with the purchase of storybooks, curriculum guides, student workbooks, and support materials.

At that time, I served as the primary teacher for Character Education in elementary grades, as well as the teacher for a Peacemakers class offered as an elective in middle school. Gradually, our school counselors and teachers were brought into more involved roles. This was for two reasons: 1) to increase both my and the counselors' availability, and 2) to maximize the research-backed benefits of having classroom teachers in the driver's seat with Character Education.

Fast-forward to today, and we've got a detailed, comprehensive, and scaffolded Character Education program that is primarily taught by classroom teachers, with support from me and the counselors. Everything, from the storybooks that accompany lessons (that are also digitally available), to animation, videos, and activities, is focused on helping our students to be the best version of themselves possible.

In middle school, character education is embedded in Advisory classes, and uses the anchor text The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Stephen Covey. As in elementary, a variety of lessons and activities are used to encourage self-awareness and exploration of character concepts, social-emotional learning, respect and appreciation for differences, bullying prevention, and career development. Students have opportunities to address high-risk behaviors and wellness topics as well.
