CoreVirtues  Letter from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

It is hard to believe that it is already September! School is starting to take form and the busy opening is now settling in. I have a feeling of deep gratitude for our Flagstaff Academy Community and all the work that has gone into making this year a spectacular start for everyone. All of these efforts are for our students and to create an inviting learning environment that will make them lifelong learners.

One of the most important vehicles for the future of our students is the wide reading that they do outside of school.

Of all the research-based strategies described, wide reading is perhaps the most effective and the easiest to implement. Extensive reading has been linked to improvement in general knowledge, vocabulary, spelling, verbal fluency, and reading comprehension. Also, the amount of reading students do is positively correlated with word identification skills, academic achievement, comprehension, reading fluency, and writing. Wide reading is the window to the world. Finally, increasing the time spent reading independently has been shown to be an effective way to be high achieving throughout life.

A teacher's number one job is to help children fall in love with books. After that, most of reading "instruction" is a matter of making good books available and providing time for students to read. Take time for you and your children to read voraciously, as this is the key to your child's future.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Sharon Aguina,
Executive Principal
Flagstaff Academy

Be A Superhero for Hurricane Harvey Flood Relief!
Wednesday, September 6th-Friday, September 8th

Our Student Council (StuCo) is using next week's Late Start Superhero Spirit Day to launch a school-wide campaign to contribute to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Our Flagstaff Academy community knows firsthand, from our own devastating floods in 2013, how important it is to feel an outpouring of support in order to recover, heal, and rebuild.

StuCo is asking ALL students and families to contribute a donation to their classrooms beginning Wednesday, September 6th through Friday, September 8th  to truly BE superheroes for people who need help. Any amount will help! Cash and checks (made out to American Red Cross) only.

All proceeds will be donated through the American Red Cross.

Dragons care!

September Board of Directors Meeting

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Late Pick Up Fees

Flagstaff Academy students must be picked up before the school closes at the end of each school day. School closes 30 minutes after classes end. On regular school days, classes end at 3:30 p.m. and the school closes at 4:00 p.m. On early release days, school closes 30 minutes after classes end.

After 30 minutes, parents will be charged a fee of $5.00 at the 5th minute after the school closes, and $1.00 for each minute thereafter for late arrivals. Fees will be applied to the student's Infinite Campus account. This is effective immediately.

The Dragon Flight after school child care program is available for students who cannot be picked up during regularly scheduled school hours.
