A Special Total Solar Eclipse Message from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal, and Stacy Wolff, Elementary Science Lab Teacher

Dear Dragon Families:

This has been an outstanding opening week at Flagstaff Academy.  Families were thrilled with the sparkling building, the ambient classrooms, and a variety of start of school events. Best of all, on opening day, Tuesday, August 15th, the entire student and staff community participated in our annual Flag Raising Ceremony. And on Wednesday the 16th, Kindergarten students, joined by their parents began their Flagstaff Academy journey. I was out viewing a variety of interactive and engaging opening lessons and enjoyed visiting with students during their lunch and recess. The enthusiasm and excitement is just heartwarming!

As you know, we've been promoting Flagstaff Academy's educational plan for the highly-anticipated solar eclipse on this coming Monday, August 21st. I want you to be aware of the plan for Monday in every respect, and also to provide information about our educational programming for this important event.
Flagstaff Academy is providing safety viewing goggles for all students and staff, which all students and staff will be required to use. By following proper eclipse viewing glasses and other safety procedures, viewing an eclipse can be a safe and rewarding learning experience. Our glasses are ISO 12312-2 and CE certified, providing maximum safety.

All permission forms must be turned in by the beginning of school on Monday, August 21, 2017. You may either fill out the electronic form, or the paper form. Any student who does not have a signed/submitted permission slip will be required to stay indoors and view the remote broadcast in the gym.

Please plan on meeting promptly in the gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. for a brief welcome from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal. At 6:45 p.m., families will be dismissed to their students' classrooms for a presentation from their teacher. A second session is available from 7:20 p.m.-7:45 p.m., if you have children in more than one classroom.

Late Pick Up Fees

Flagstaff Academy students must be picked up before the school closes at the end of each school day. School closes 30 minutes after classes end. On regular school days, classes end at 3:30 p.m. and the school closes at 4:00 p.m. On early release days, school closes 30 minutes after classes end.

After 30 minutes, parents will be charged a fee of $5.00 at the 5th minute after the school closes, and $1.00 for each minute thereafter for late arrivals. Fees will be applied to the student's Infinite Campus account. This is effective immediately.

The Dragon Flight after school child care program is available for students who cannot be picked up during regularly scheduled school hours. The Dragon Flight program and registration information is available on the Flagstaff Academy website. Please contact the Dragon Flight Director, Jeanna Peppler at  jpeppler@flagstaffacademy.org for questions regarding the program. For families needing financial assistance, Dragon Flight participates in the Colorado Childcare Assistance Program (CCAP). Families must complete the online registration process prior to students attending drop-in care.

In the event of an emergency, please contact the school as soon as possible at 303-651-7900, so arrangements can be made for your student(s).

A Reminder about Smart Watches, FitBits, Fidget Spinners, and other distracting items: 

As stated in our 2017-2018 Student and Family Handbook (p.25):
  • Children should not bring toys or treasured items to school unless it is for Show and Tell or is related to an academic subject. Toy weapons are not permitted at school for any reason.
  • All electronic devices, including cell phones, iPods, Game Boys, etc., at an elementary school age are considered toys. Items must be kept in the student's cubby or locker. Students are not allowed to have iPods, electronic games, or cell phones turned on at any time during school hours. If a staff member notices a student with any such item during school hours, it will be confiscated and the parent must retrieve it from the front office after school. The school is not responsible for lost or broken items. Again, toy weapons are not permitted at school.
PLEASE leave these items at home! If they ding, buzz, light up, etc., they do not belong in the classroom, as they are becoming a major distraction.

2017-2018 Gifted and Talented 
Parent Nomination Process

Flagstaff Academy will be conducting Gifted and Talented screenings for all 3rd grade students in September. At this time, parents of students in grades K-8, other than 3rd grade who wish to nominate their student for GT testing may do so.

To nominate your student, please visit the Front Office and pick up a District nomination form, as well as a parent input form. All forms must be returned to the Front Office by Friday, September 8th, 2017. Incomplete nomination forms will not be accepted. Student records will then be evaluated, and testing needs determined. Please do NOT contact homeroom teachers.

2017-2018 Preschool Openings

2017 Middle School Pingree Park Trip
Wednesday, September 27 - Friday, September 29, 2017

Essential Information:
  • Information Packet and Permission Form (required of all students): The A-Z of what you and your student needs to know, from packing lists, to activities, and more! The packet includes the Emergency/Health Form, and the 7th Grade Ropes Course Permission Slip
  • Medical Administration Permission FormW hether your student takes prescribed or over-the-counter medications, such as Advil, Benadryl, Tums, etc., you'll need to have this form signed by your doctor. Summer "well-child" visits are a great time to get this done!
  • All medicines must be turned starting Tuesday, August 29th through Wednesday, September 20th, one week before departure by appointment only with this form. Remember, no medications will be accepted on the day of the departure. 
  • PaymentsThe cost to attend Pingree Park is $150 and includes all meals. Payments can be made as of Monday, Aug. 14th
