CoreVirtues  Letter from Sharon Aguina, Executive Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

Fall is almost here and we are now entering a time when we've settled into school and are focusing on our learning. As I'm visiting classrooms, I can see that students know their routines now and are moving towards deeper learning.

September is a time to celebrate the connections between what students already know, developing and deepening concepts, and expanding their skills in all areas.

Teachers are observant and diagnostic in seeing the learning needs of students. They are listening to student answers, looking closely at their written responses, taking note of the questions, and are in tune to their interests and preferences as learners.

In addition to your students' classroom performance, we also receive information about your student's learning needs from Benchmark Assessments in reading, math, and writing for students during the Fall, Winter, and Spring.

One of the indicators that schools receive in the late Summer and Early Fall are the results of the state test "Colorado Measure of Academic Success" (CMAS) that is completed the previous Spring. This data gives us information about the subskill performance of students in Reading and Math for grades 3 through 8, and grades 5 and 8 in Science.

While some of these benchmarking assessments look for practical skills, the CMAS really looks at the deep level of thinking and application that students are able to do. Students often have to physically sort or categorize information, to answer questions that require problem solving and application of their knowledge, or to compare and contrast two kinds of writing and develop a common theme, provide their own connections, and cite text evidence. The CMAS is a sophisticated assessment and is looking for the skills that make students college and career ready. Part of readiness is building stamina in taking assessments like this.

Our current test scores for CMAS from Spring 2017 show that students are in general above the state and local school District in Reading and Math - and well above in Science. However, Flagstaff Academy wants to promote deep learning for all students.

You will be hearing more about your child's individual learning during conferences in October 11th and 12th.

Have a great weekend!

Sharon Aguina,
Executive Principal
Flagstaff Academy

Late Pick Up Fees

Flagstaff Academy students must be picked up before the school closes at the end of each school day. School closes 30 minutes after classes end. On regular school days, classes end at 3:30 p.m. and the school closes at 4:00 p.m. On early release days, school closes 30 minutes after classes end.

After 30 minutes, parents will be charged a fee of $5.00 at the 5th minute after the school closes, and $1.00 for each minute thereafter for late arrivals. Fees will be applied to the student's Infinite Campus account. This is effective immediately.

The Dragon Flight after school child care program is available for students who cannot be picked up during regularly scheduled school hours. The Dragon Flight program and registration information is available on the Flagstaff Academy website. Please contact the Dragon Flight Director, Jeanna Peppler at  jpeppler@flagstaffacademy.org for questions regarding the program. For families needing financial assistance, Dragon Flight participates in the Colorado Childcare Assistance Program (CCAP). Families must complete the online registration process prior to students attending drop-in care.

In the event of an emergency, please contact the school as soon as possible at 303-651-7900, so arrangements can be made for your student(s).

Before/After School Care and Enrichment Classes

Flagstaff Academy's in-house Dragon Flight program provides on-site before and after school care and enrichment classes. Dragon Flight provides students a warm, enriching environment while maintaining Flagstaff Academy's standards and values.

Enrichment: All students should meet in the cafeteria at 3:25 p.m. Every student should bring an afternoon snack to eat in the cafeteria during roll call. Students should wait on the white wall in the cafeteria after class for their parents to pick them up. Dragon Flight staff will sign each student out to their parents. Please use the cafeteria doors to pick your child up. You will need to fill out the door code waiver in order to receive a private code for entrance. The waiver can be found on the Dragon Flight page under Parent Resources. Staff and other parents will not let people in. If there is no school, there is no class.
