While fossil fuels are associated with high CO2-emissions, there is now more discussion about the impact of mining for lithium, a key ingredient in batteries for Electric Vehicles -- discussed in an article in WIRED Magazine.
"
As the world scrambles to replace fossil fuels with clean energy, the environmental impact of finding all the lithium required to enable that transformation could become a serious issue in its own right. One of the biggest environmental problems caused by our endless hunger for the latest and smartest devices is a growing mineral crisis, particularly those needed to make our batteries,” says Christina Valimaki an analyst at Elsevier. Prime Leasing Opportunities - Available in Everett & Coming Soon to Bellingham
|
|
Redevelopment and expansion of four Birch Equipment facilities are almost done with operations teams working at warp speed over the last five years. Birch crews continued providing top-quality fleet and service to customers during construction and company-wide expansion of capacity and fleet investments. All facilities feature open floor plans for better work flow, eliminating wasted motion and showcasing Birch's fleet, and mobile work stations put Birch crews on the sales floor to help customers better.
- Bellingham - Birch's flagship store is moving in mid 2020 to a new location on Iowa Street. The site gives customers access to explore Birch's new open concept. The move creates leasing opportunities for office and light industrial uses at a portion of the Kentucky Street property with the unusual benefits of existing parking and no noise restrictions. Birch's Maintenance Facility will stay at Kentucky Street.
- Everett - Birch has transformed a 3-acre site in S. Everett between Airport Rd. and the Mukilteo Speedway off Hwy 99 into another flagship facility. Before construction could even start, Birch removed tons of surface and sub-grade trash. The property now includes a 8,000 square foot rental & retail facility with permitting underway for an 8,000 square foot maintenance facility. A dilapidated 1,600 square foot structure on the property at the time of purchase, affectionately named The Jewel, has been completely remodeled and is available for lease for office use with plenty of space for parking or a small lay-down yard.
- Mount Vernon - 1st location to launch Birch's new open store concept. The existing 3,600 square foot building was taken down to the studs and the building and equipment yard were reconfigured for optimal use of the 1/2-acre site.
- Sitka - Gets 1st prize for 'Equipment rental location with the best view anywhere in the United States'. Store operations were moved out of a temporary facility on the outskirts of town into a 4,000 square foot building on 1-acre of property centrally located on Sitka's waterfront. The store supports the islands and mainland of SE Alaska.

Birch is committed to hosting student tours of its facilities in Western Washington.
A special shout out goes to
Lynden High School
Teachers Eileen Clausen, Steve Gibb & Eli Varner and
Options High School
Teachers Jami Aeschliman & Joe Wooding who visited Birch - Bellingham with students. They enjoyed a facility tour while learning about company culture, open door policy, staff longevity and employee perks. The students were very engaged with great questions. Looking forward to having some of these bright minds as future Birch employees!
“The visit to Birch was valuable, well organized, and a wonderful first foray into work site visits for our students as they explore potential career opportunities. Birch's Owner, Sarah, took time personally to instruct our students and a diverse group of her employees took turns educating us on their specific positions within the company. Each one patiently answered questions and provided relevant work-readiness information in a fun & engaging way.”
