Flight Restrictions 12/12/2025 Update

Hi Neighbors!

We're writing to give you the latest on the year-round flight restrictions at Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA) implemented by the FAA on October 20th, following an order from the U.S. Secret Service. This is the 3rd newsletter update. You can find previous ones here and here.

Yesterday, the Citizens Committee on Airport Noise (CCAN) held its second meeting since the Flight Restrictions went into effect. This meeting, like the previous one, was live streamed on YouTube and you can watch it here.

CCAN members had a extensive agenda; here are the highlights:

  • Gregg provided an update on the actions taken by the Board of County Commissioners (BCC), directing the County Attorney’s office to file a petition for review in court by close of business today, provided that the FAA does not grant an extension that would allow the county to file the petition at a later time. Watch Gregg explaining at the BCC workshop why he believes filing this petition is so important (you can also watch by clicking on the image below).

  • CCAN member Lew Crampton, who serves on the Palm Beach Town Council, noted that the town is also filing a petition with the courts.

  • Senior Deputy Director Gary Sypek gave a presentation summarizing the comments and suggestions expressed by the public at the previous meeting.

  • Felicia Goldstein, with Congresswoman Lois Frankel’s office, spoke about her upcoming meeting with the Secret Service scheduled for December 18th. Frankel is also working on getting a meeting with the FAA. The focus of her meetings is to find alternatives that mitigate the impact and to find out what prompted the changes. Goldstein said she hopes to report back after the meeting but explained that the Secret Service, can pretty much do what they want, and don’t have to provide an explanation.

  • The Department of Airports sent a letter to the FAA on November 18th, commenting on the procedural changes and formally challenging these changes, requesting full environmental reviews and proper community consultation before the procedures become permanent. Read that letter here or by clicking the button at the bottom of this page.

  • CCAN heard from several members of the public about how the changes have impacted their lives. This included a lively presentation by Raphael Clemente who brought a speaker and let the committee members experience the noise impact he experiences at his home.

  • Aviation expert DeWitt Ingram told the committee about a briefing he provided to Congresswoman Frankel, and he explained how the new flight pattern requires certain incoming aircraft to perform sharp turns right before landing, which comes with a considerable amount of risk.

  • Lastly, the Committee talked about the placement of noise monitors to adequately measure the noise impacts, a discussion that will continue at the next meeting on January 22nd at 9:30 AM.

Many of you are upset and want to do something that can help change the current predicament.

We encourage you to report noise comments here.
